On Monday night, the New Jersey Devils delivered a thrilling performance against the Boston Bruins, securing a 4-3 overtime victory that had fans on the edge of their seats. The Bruins had previously taken the upper hand in their season series with a decisive 4-1 win back in December, but the Devils were ready to even the score.
The game kicked off with the Bruins taking an early two-goal lead in the first period. However, the Devils fought back, leveling the score by the midway point of the second period.
Just two minutes into the third, the Devils took their first lead of the night, only for the Bruins to quickly respond and tie it up again. The tension carried into overtime, where the Devils ultimately clinched the win in the dying seconds.
Cotter Seals the Deal
Paul Cotter was the hero of the night, scoring the crucial third-period goal that gave the Devils their initial lead and then coming through in overtime. After a save by Jacob Markstrom on a Charlie McAvoy shot, Dougie Hamilton snagged the rebound and passed it to Jack Hughes.
Hughes, despite a fall, managed to propel the puck into the Devils’ zone. Cotter seized the opportunity, breaking away and deftly slipping the puck past Joonas Korpisalo for his first overtime game-winner.
These two goals marked Cotter’s seventh and eighth of the season, and it was his first multi-goal game this year. With 13 points, mostly from goals, Cotter has proven himself a valuable asset in the Devils' lineup, providing depth and scoring when needed. As he approaches the end of his three-year contract, performances like this could secure his future in New Jersey.
Hughes Sets a New Benchmark
Jack Hughes continued to carve his name into Devils history, becoming the fastest player to reach 400 points with the team, achieving this feat in just 414 games. His assist on Connor Brown’s goal was the milestone moment, but Hughes wasn’t done. He notched another assist on Jesper Bratt’s goal and added a primary assist on Cotter’s OT winner, bringing his season total to 51 points.
Despite missing 21 games due to an upper-body injury and subsequent surgery, Hughes has made an impressive return, showcasing the skills that made him a standout in the Olympics. His resilience and talent have been a source of pride for the Devils.
Special Teams Stand Tall
The latter part of the third period saw a flurry of penalties, with the Devils handing the Bruins four power-play opportunities, including a tense 5-on-3. Yet, the Devils’ penalty kill unit held firm, keeping Boston off the scoreboard during these critical moments.
Currently sitting with a 79.8% success rate on the penalty kill, the Devils’ special teams were instrumental in pushing the game to overtime and securing the victory. While the playoffs may be out of reach, wins like these are a testament to the team’s grit and determination.
Next Up: The Road Ahead
The Devils are set to embark on a five-game road trip, starting with a matchup against the New York Rangers on Wednesday. They’ll conclude their season series against the Bruins on April 14, marking the end of a challenging yet rewarding campaign.
