The Bruins have already made one notable move this offseason, but the work in Boston is far from finished.
After getting bounced in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Buffalo Sabres, the message from Bruins president Cam Neely and general manager Don Sweeney was clear when they met with the media five days after Game 6 at TD Garden: the roster needs more talent for the 2026-27 season. That’s the easy part. Actually getting it done has been another story.
So far, Sweeney has checked off just one of the three obvious needs on the Bruins’ list. In June, he landed JJ Peterka from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for a pair of first-round draft picks.
But the other two priorities remain unresolved: a top-four right-shot defenseman and a top-six center. Sweeney reportedly had a deal lined up for Darnell Nurse of the Edmonton Oilers on July 1, but that move reportedly fell apart.
That leaves Boston watching the rest of the Atlantic Division, and two rivals in particular could make life even tougher if they finally swing big.
Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report identified five NHL teams that still need a game-changing trade after coming up empty so far this offseason, and two of them are Atlantic Division clubs: the Buffalo Sabres and the Detroit Red Wings.
Buffalo is the more obvious threat. If the Sabres are going to make a major move, the likely target would be goaltending help.
One name they’ve been linked to is Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets. If Buffalo lands a goalie of that caliber, it changes the picture in a hurry and adds another serious problem for Boston in the division.
Detroit’s situation is different. Steve Yzerman recently stepped down, and the search for his replacement is underway. Until that hire is made, there isn’t likely to be a game-changing move on the way.
If Buffalo and Detroit both get better before the season begins and the Bruins mostly stay where they are, Boston’s path back to the postseason in 2026-27 gets a lot more crowded. And while Peterka counts as a meaningful addition on paper, not every Bruins fan is going to call that enough.

He spent the past four seasons as a steady scoring presence for the Providence Bruins, giving Boston a skilled call-up option and a player who seemed to keep forcing his way into the conversation whenever the prospect pool came up.
