Bruins Just Turned A Zadorov Scratch Into A Bigger Problem

Could a recent disciplinary benching signal a future move for Bruins' defenseman Nikita Zadorov to the Toronto Maple Leafs?

The Bruins made a point with Nikita Zadorov on Saturday, and his agent wasted no time turning that message into a little Maple Leafs fuel.

After Zadorov was scratched against the Los Angeles Kings, his name spread fast online. The benching came one night after the Boston defenseman took an undisciplined double-minor in Friday’s 4-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks.

Late in the second period, with the Bruins trailing 2-1, Zadorov was first penalized for elbowing Frank Vatrano. After Vatrano reacted, Zadorov added a roughing minor for retaliation.

Boston coach Marco Sturm said the move was about accountability and discipline. Before Saturday’s game, he made it clear why Zadorov was out.

"Z is a tremendous player and leader for our team,” Sturm said. “We’ve been mentioning for a while his discipline on the ice.

I think that’s something that just needs to be better. He was not happy.

He’s a great human being, and he’s a competitor. I do believe he will come back stronger after this message.

He will be back to normal and even better after that."

He followed that up with another blunt assessment:

"I do believe there’s another level in him. Now we just got to find it.

The discipline; he just needs to be smarter. That’s all it is."

The scratch drew attention beyond Boston almost immediately. On social media, one fan suggested to Zadorov’s agent, Dan Milstein, that the 6-foot-7 blueliner would not be treated the same way if he were wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs sweater.

"He wouldn't be treated like this in Toronto," the fan wrote.

Milstein’s response was short and sharp:

"No, he would not..."

That exchange was enough to stir up new chatter about Zadorov’s future, even though there have been no reported trade talks involving the Maple Leafs. For now, Zadorov remains under a six-year, $30 million contract with Boston and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2030.

Through eight games this season, Zadorov has three points, all assists, for the Bruins, who are 7-2-0 and sitting atop the Atlantic Division.

Bruins Roster Crunch Is Turning One Forward Into Trade Bait

Matthew Poitras being cleared to play has only tightened the squeeze on Bostons forward group, and the Bruins responded by placing Mikey Eyssimont on waivers and sending him to Providence. It is the kind of roster move that says as much about logjams as it does about performance, because Eyssimont has been productive in the AHL and still found himself on the outside looking in when the Bruins had to make room.

The problem for Boston is that there is simply no easy path back into the lineup right now, even with Eyssimont doing enough in Providence to keep his name in the conversation. When a player is producing down below but has no obvious opening upstairs, that is often where trade chatter starts to build, and the Bruins appear to be there now with a depth piece who may be more valuable as an asset than as a spare forward on the roster. Bruins Suddenly Have A Matt Poitras Problem They Might Welcome

Matt Poitras has gone from a low-profile one-year, two-way signing to a player the Bruins have found ways to fit into the lineup almost immediately. After getting past a lower-body injury, the young forward has suited up for six games and chipped in five points, enough to draw steady praise from coach Marco Sturm for handling his assignments and taking advantage of the openings created by injuries around him.

The bigger wrinkle for Boston is what happens when the lineup gets healthier. Sean Kuraly was scratched while Poitras kept earning looks higher up the board, and Kuraly has since been preparing to return, which only tightens the competition for ice time. For a team trying to sort out its depth on the fly, Poitras has given the Bruins a useful problem, even if it is one they may have to solve sooner rather than later. [Read more 🡒]

David Pastrnak Just Reached Another Historic Bruins Milestone

David Pastrnak kept moving up the Bruins record lists in Bostons win over the Kings, scoring early in the second period to pull the game level before the Bs pulled away for a 4-1 victory. It was his fourth goal of the season and another reminder that even in the early going, he remains one of the most productive scorers the franchise has ever had.

The goal also gave Pastrnak another milestone to chase within Bostons history books, adding more weight to a night that already felt important for the top line. He left the game with a goal and an assist, and the way he has been driving offense lately gives the Bruins a familiar kind of comfort as they keep sorting out their start. [Read more 🡒]
