The Bruins hit the road Thursday night with a first-place spot in the Atlantic Division and a chance to keep building on a strong start. Boston, sitting at 11-4-1, opens a three-game season series with the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena, and it’s the first of two games away from TD Garden this month.
Boston comes in with 23 points, good for the top of the division. The Bruins are three points behind the Hurricanes for the top spot in the conference, while holding a two-point edge over the Canadiens and Senators in the division.
They’ve gone 7-2-1 over their last 10, though their 4-3-1 road mark shows they’ve been a little less sharp away from home. Even so, the numbers remain strong: the Bruins are still in the top 10 in both goals for per game at 3.56 and goals against per game at 2.38.
Frederic Brunet is expected to return to the lineup, and Matt Poitras is a game-time decision.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is trying to climb out of a rough spot. The Penguins are 5-8-2 and have just 12 points, tied with the Blue Jackets and Flyers for the fewest in the East. They’ve dropped into a 0-2-1 stretch over their last three and are 3-6-1 in their last 10, though they’ve been noticeably better on home ice with a 4-2-1 record through seven games.
The Penguins are also expected to get Evgeni Malkin back after he missed Tuesday’s game against the Golden Knights. The 40-year-old has 11 points (6-5-11) in 13 games and ranks third on the team in scoring behind Erik Karlsson (3-13-16) and Tommy Novak (5-7-12).
Boston will not hold a morning skate in Pittsburgh on Thursday, and Marco Sturm is set to speak with the media about 90 minutes before puck drop.
The Bruins’ expected defensive pairings are Hampus Lindholm with Charlie McAvoy, Nikita Zadorov with Will Borgen, and Frederic Brunet with Mason Lohrei. The projected starting goalie is Michael DiPietro, who is 3-1-0 with a 2.26 GAA and a .929 save percentage, though that has not been confirmed.
Pittsburgh’s expected lineup has Tommy Novak centering Sidney Crosby and Rickard Rakell, with Egor Chinakhov between Ben Kindel and Evgeni Malkin. Ville Koivunen is listed with Hendrix Lapierre and Justin Brazeau, while Connor Dewar skates with Blake Lizotte and Nick Robertson.
On defense, the Penguins are expected to go with Sam Girard and Erik Karlsson, Spencer Stastney and Kaedan Korczak, and Declan Carlile and Kris Letang. Arturs Silovs is the projected starter in net, carrying a 5-4-1 record, 2.98 GAA, and .888 save percentage.
Special teams give Boston a slight edge in one area and Pittsburgh the advantage in another. The Bruins’ power play is clicking at 20.0%, which ranks 19th, while their penalty kill sits at 76.4%, 18th. The Penguins’ power play is at 18.2%, 22nd, and their penalty kill is 82.1%, 11th.
This is the first meeting of the season between the teams, with the Bruins and Penguins scheduled to meet again on Saturday, Mar. 6 in Boston at 12:30 PM and Thursday, Mar. 11 in Pittsburgh at 7:30 PM.
Boston’s upcoming schedule after Thursday includes a home game against Florida on Sunday, Nov. 8, followed by matchups with Montreal, Minnesota, Los Angeles, and a road game at Detroit.

Celtics Still Have One Big Mitchell Robinson Question to Answer
Mitchell Robinsons early stretch with the Celtics has been a study in adjustment. The big man has had to fit into a different role than the one he played with the Knicks, and the transition has shown up in his offense, where his rebounding and shooting efficiency have slipped from what he had been producing before arriving in Boston. Even so, Joe Mazzulla has pointed to the broader value Robinson brings, especially on the defensive end and in the way he changes the feel of the second unit.
There have still been encouraging flashes, including a recent win over Milwaukee without Jayson Tatum, when Robinson grabbed six offensive rebounds and logged 20 positive bench minutes despite some shooting issues and a negative net rating. The larger question for Boston is how much of his current production is simply part of the learning curve and how much reflects a more persistent fit issue, because the Celtics clearly need the version of Robinson who can tilt a game without needing everything to go right around him. Bruins Hit A Serious Roadblock In Their Dylan Larkin Pursuit
The Bruins have reportedly shown real interest in Dylan Larkin, but the path to even getting into the conversation looks complicated. Boston is among the teams pursuing the Detroit Red Wings center, yet Larkins current list of acceptable destinations does not include the Bruins, which immediately puts a hard limit on how far those talks can go.
NHL insiders Elliotte Friedman and Darren Dreger have both suggested Detroit would need Larkins approval for any deal, and the Red Wings are still exploring their options. For Boston, that leaves the situation hanging on whether Larkins stance changes, because until then the Bruins are working against a very real roadblock rather than a straightforward trade market. Bruins Fast Start Has Created A Bigger Question In Boston
The Bruins have spent the opening weeks of the 2026-27 season looking every bit like a team that intends to stay in the Atlantic race from the jump. Boston sits atop the division behind a strong start, with captain David Pastrk again driving the attack and rookie James Hagens giving the lineup another layer of energy and skill. It has been the kind of early stretch that can change the tone around a team quickly, especially when the results come with enough consistency to make the standings look a little different each night.
Still, the bigger question in Boston is whether this pace can survive the grind that comes later. Fast starts are one thing in the NHL, but holding position through injuries, road trips and the long middle of the schedule is another, and the Bruins have already shown enough to invite that conversation. For now, the early returns have put them in a favorable spot, but the real test is whether this version of Boston can keep answering the same questions well into the season. [Read more 🡒]
