Heading into Thursday night's clash with the San Jose Sharks at TD Garden, the Boston Bruins were eager to snag two crucial points before embarking on a three-game road trip. Riding high on a 13-game home winning streak, the Bruins aimed to capitalize on a struggling Sharks squad that had dropped three straight.
But instead of seizing the opportunity, Boston found themselves stymied by San Jose's rising stars and a stellar performance from goalie Alex Nedeljkovic. The result was a regulation loss that Boston could ill afford as the Columbus Blue Jackets closed in, trailing by just a point after their overtime loss to the Florida Panthers.
Bruins' Missed Opportunities
Early in the game, NESN's Judd Sirott and Andy Brickley pointed out that the Bruins were likely to pepper the Sharks' net with shots, and they did just that with 40 attempts. Yet, they couldn't solve Nedeljkovic, who was a brick wall in goal.
The Bruins' roster lacks a plethora of natural goal scorers compared to teams like the Buffalo Sabres, Tampa Bay Lightning, or Colorado Avalanche. So, when you outshoot a team like the Sharks and still come up empty, it's tough to swallow those missed points in the standings.
Swayman's Steadfast Performance
While Nedeljkovic was turning away everything the Bruins threw at him, Jeremy Swayman was doing his best to keep Boston in the contest. Despite allowing two goals in the first 40 minutes-both of which were unstoppable-Swayman made several key saves.
He denied Macklin Celebrini on a breakaway and made a crucial post-to-post stop on Kiefer Sherwood during a 2-on-1. Unfortunately, he had no chance against Collin Graf's shorthanded breakaway goal in the third, nor William Eklund's impressive mid-air strike.
Swayman finished with 24 saves, preventing the scoreline from getting out of hand.
Sharks' Young Talent Shines
San Jose's youthful roster showed why the future looks bright, despite their recent skid. The Sharks didn't play like a team on a losing streak; their young guns stepped up when it mattered.
Celebrini's Olympic performance for Team Canada was a testament to his skill, and he continued to impress. Eklund notched a goal and an assist, while Will Smith, a Boston College alum, also made his presence felt.
In sweeping the season series against Boston, San Jose's promising talent left a lasting impression.
The Bruins need to regroup quickly as they hit the road, knowing they can't afford to let opportunities slip away if they want to stay ahead in the standings.
