Boise State’s leadership group for 2026 looks exactly like the kind of trio the Broncos would trust heading into a big season: experienced, battle-tested and all homegrown.
On Tuesday night, Boise State announced that fifth-year seniors Roger Carreon, Maddux Madsen and Jayden Virgin-Morgan will serve as team captains. The choice was hardly a shock. Each has spent his entire college career in Boise, and each has already become a central figure for the Broncos.
Carreon, a 6-foot-5, 330-pound right guard, returns with 34 career appearances and 26 starts. He started 13 games at the position last season while dealing with multiple nagging injuries.
Carreon did not take part in spring practice, but he was described as having a strong fall camp as Boise State prepared for its Week 1 matchup with No. 2 Oregon on Saturday, Sept.
“Roger has played a ton of football,” Broncos head coach Spencer Danielson said of Carreon during his pre-camp press conference. “Roger is the hands-down leader of that offensive line, and Roger is one of the top leaders on our entire team.
You talk with Roger for five minutes, and you’re going to want to put your head through that wall. That’s who Roger is, he loves this team.”
Madsen enters his third season as Boise State’s full-time starter at quarterback and carries a 20-6 record in that role. The 5-foot-10, 210-pound senior has completed 61 percent of his passes for 6,586 yards, 50 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He has also added 423 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.
Danielson has been especially vocal about Madsen’s growth as a leader.
“Really, really proud of Maddux’s leadership … and it’s not just even as an offense,” Danielson said after a recent scrimmage. “He’s grabbing me and saying, ‘Hey coach, let me get the team after this walkthrough because I saw some trash on the ground.’ When you start having that happening, I’m excited where that’s heading to, especially for him.
“He’s the best he’s ever been athletically. He took off (during the scrimmage) on a third down and he can run, he’s athletic.”
Virgin-Morgan rounds out the group after putting together one of the most productive careers on the roster. The 6-foot-3, 257-pound edge rusher has appeared in 45 games and started 34 of them. His stat line includes 120 total tackles, 31 for loss, 16 sacks, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three pass breakups.
He is also Boise State’s top prospect for the 2027 NFL Draft.
Danielson has consistently pointed to Virgin-Morgan’s work ethic and leadership since the start of his time with the program.
Madsen and Virgin-Morgan were also captains last season, when they were joined by offensive tackle Kage Casey and linebacker Marco Notarainni. Notarainni has exhausted his eligibility, while Casey declared for the NFL Draft and was selected in the fourth round by the Denver Broncos.

Boise States move into the new Pac-12 era comes with an updated Albertsons Stadium and, just as importantly, a fan base that already looks ready to fill it. The school completed a $70 million renovation that added about 1,600 premium seats, and the stadium is now estimated to hold around 35,000, a slight dip from its previous official capacity.
Even with the adjustment, demand has stayed strong. Boise State has already sold more than 20,000 season tickets for the upcoming season and is aiming to reach 23,000 with six regular-season home games on the schedule, a sign that the Broncos home-field pull is not fading as conference realignment changes the backdrop around them. Boise State Opens Pac-12 Camp With Plenty Still To Prove
Boise State opened fall camp on Aug. 3 with a different kind of backdrop this year, stepping into its first season in the revamped Pac-12 while still trying to answer a few familiar questions. The Broncos have a mix of returning starters and new faces, including quarterback Maddux Madsen and wide receiver Akeem Wright, and head coach Spencer Danielson is already pushing the point that last years success does not carry over automatically.
The next few weeks should reveal plenty, with intrasquad scrimmages set for Aug. 15 and Aug. 22 before the opener at Oregon on Sept. 5. Even with camp underway, several position battles remain unresolved and the roster is still taking shape, which leaves Boise State balancing confidence in what it has built with the reality that this is a new league test and a fresh start all at once. Boise State Starts Addressing A Backcourt Concern Fans Can See Coming
Boise State is already looking ahead in the backcourt, and the timing makes sense. The Broncos have lined up an official visit for four-star point guard Jamaal McKnight Jr. from Sept. 19-21, giving the staff a chance to get an early read on a class of 2027 prospect who already has multiple offers and is drawing interest from other programs as well, including UNLV.
For a program facing major roster turnover after the 2026-27 season, the need is easy to see coming. At least five spots are expected to open because of graduating players and transfers, so landing a young point guard with McKnight Jr.'s profile would be an important first step in smoothing that transition and keeping the backcourt from becoming a scramble later on.
