Boise State Promotes Frazier to Key Role in Offensive Strategy

A key figure in Boise States recent defensive success, Frazier takes on a larger role as hes tapped to shape the Broncos run game strategy.

Boise State Elevates Frazier to Run Game Coordinator Amid Defensive Dominance

Boise, Idaho - Boise State’s defense has been one of the most disruptive units in the country over the past few seasons, and now one of the architects behind that chaos is stepping into a bigger role. Head coach Spencer Danielson announced Thursday that EDGE coach Jabril Frazier has been promoted to run game coordinator, a move that adds another layer of responsibility to a coach who’s already made a significant impact on the Broncos’ defensive identity.

Frazier has been a fixture around the program for years - first as a playmaker on the field, and more recently as a rising star on the sidelines. He’s been part of five Mountain West titles with Boise State, winning two as a player (2014, 2017) and three more as a coach since taking over the EDGE position in 2023. That kind of continuity isn’t just rare - it’s invaluable, especially for a program that prides itself on player development and defensive toughness.

And Frazier’s influence has been felt in a big way. Last season, the Broncos forced 23 turnovers, ranking third in the Mountain West and 21st nationally.

They also finished third in the conference in total defense, giving up just 337.6 yards per game. But perhaps the most eye-popping stat: Boise State led the entire country with 55 sacks in 2024.

That’s not just a good year - that’s an elite pass-rushing campaign, and Frazier was right in the middle of it.

His work with Boise State’s EDGE group has been especially impressive. Under his guidance, Ahmed Hassanein and Jayden Virgin-Morgan blossomed into two of the most feared pass rushers in the country.

Hassanein earned first-team all-conference honors in both 2023 and 2024, racking up 12.5 sacks as a junior (sixth nationally) and 9.5 more as a senior (tied for 16th). Virgin-Morgan, meanwhile, broke out in 2024 with 10.0 sacks as a redshirt sophomore, tying him for 14th in the nation.

He followed that up with a second-team all-conference nod, thanks to a stat line that included 56 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Frazier’s ability to identify talent, refine technique, and put his players in position to succeed has been a cornerstone of Boise State’s defensive resurgence. And that’s not just coach-speak - the numbers back it up.

The Broncos also tallied 111 tackles for loss last season, good for seventh in the nation. That kind of backfield penetration doesn’t happen by accident.

It’s the product of a system that works - and a coach who knows how to get the most out of his guys.

Before he was molding future stars, Frazier was one himself. As a STUD linebacker for the Broncos, he started 28 games over four seasons and earned All-Mountain West honors twice, including a first-team nod in 2018. He finished his career with 18 sacks and 24.5 tackles for loss - numbers that speak to the same disruptive style he now instills in his players.

One of his signature performances came in the 2017 Mountain West Championship, when he notched four tackles (three solo) and a pass breakup in a win over Fresno State. Down the stretch that season, he averaged over five tackles per game across his final six contests - a testament to his motor and big-game mentality.

Frazier’s recent inclusion on 247Sports’ 30Under30 coaching list for 2025 was no fluke. He’s one of the brightest young minds in the game, and now, with added responsibilities as run game coordinator, he’ll have an even greater hand in shaping the Broncos’ defensive game plans.

For Boise State, this move is about more than just a new title. It’s about continuing to build a defense that not only leads the Mountain West - but challenges the national standard. And with Jabril Frazier helping steer the ship, the Broncos are in good hands.
