No. 25 Boise State’s first Week 10 availability report brought the biggest question of the week into focus: starting quarterback Maddux Madsen is listed as questionable for Saturday’s road game at Colorado State.
The Broncos and Rams will kick off at 4 p.m. Mountain time at Canvas Stadium, with the Pac-12 matchup set for USA Network. Boise State enters at 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Colorado State is 3-5 and 1-3.
Madsen went down with what appeared to be a left knee injury in the fourth quarter of Boise State’s 46-45 win over Texas State. At the time he left, the Broncos were trailing 39-28, but backup quarterback Max Cutforth stepped in and helped flip the game with three touchdown drives in the Pac-12 After Dark thriller.
On Monday, Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said Madsen had an MRI and was day-to-day.
“Really good to hear that it’s not going to be long-term,” Danielson said. “He’s in really positive spirits. Thank the Good Lord that it’s not serious.”
Danielson also said Monday that Cutforth would start if Madsen is unable to play against the Rams.
Cutforth, a fourth-year junior from Nampa, Idaho, made the most of his opportunity against Texas State, finishing 8 of 13 for 131 yards with three touchdowns and no turnovers. He threw two scoring passes to Rasean Jones and delivered the eventual game-winner to Akeem Wright.
“Hats off to Max,” Danielson said. “Max came in and did a phenomenal job.
(Quarterbacks coach Zak) Hill has done a great job with him, but that’s hats off to Max Cutforth. He came in in a dire moment for the team and did a phenomenal job to finish that game … but he’s been through it now.
One of the greatest teachers in life is getting reps at it.”
Cutforth is no stranger to the role. He made three starts for Madsen last season and went 2-1, including a 25-24 comeback win over Utah State that sent Boise State to the Mountain West championship game. Madsen returned the next week and helped the Broncos win a third straight MWC title.
Over his Boise State career, Cutforth has completed 105 of 182 passes, a 58 percent clip, for 1,203 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
Wednesday’s report also listed running back Sire Gaines and starting left guard Carson Rasmussen as out. No other Broncos were given an injury designation.
Gaines missed the Texas State game as well because of an undisclosed lower body injury. He has 75 carries for 418 yards and five total touchdowns this season.
Rasmussen has been sidelined since suffering an undisclosed injury against Western Michigan on Sept. 26.

Boise State Just Sent A Message Before Its First Real Test
Boise State wasted no time making a statement to open the 2026-27 season, rolling past West Coast Baptist in a game that looked lopsided from the start and wound up rewriting the program record book. Leon Rice had plenty to like afterward, pointing to the way Dovydas Butka, Damari Wheeler-Thomas, Jerquarius Stanback and Aginaldo Neto all contributed in a performance that reflected the kind of depth and pace the Broncos want to show this year.
The bigger question now is how much of that opener carries over when the competition level rises sharply. Boise States next chance to prove the early surge was more than a warm-up comes against Butler, a Big East opponent, in a nationally televised game that should tell a lot more about where this team really stands. Boise States Playoff Push Now Comes Down To A Brutal November
Boise States path to the playoff is suddenly clear enough to map, and brutal enough to make every week count. The Broncos landed at No. 25 in the College Football Playoff committees initial rankings, putting them atop the Group of Six picture and giving them a place in the conversation as November begins to tighten around the regular season.
What comes next is a demanding closing run that starts with Colorado State and rolls through Oregon State and San Diego State, a stretch that leaves little margin for error. Colorado State brings quarterback Hauss Hejny, while Oregon State offers a tougher test with Braden Atkinson and Jesse Legree, and the stakes only grow from there with Pac-12 Championship Game hosting implications tied to that matchup and a possible playoff berth still in play if Boise State can keep winning.
