Boise State will be without two important pieces when it meets Texas State on Saturday night: running back Sire Gaines and left guard Carson Rasmussen.
Gaines, who was in a walking boot on his left leg after last week’s 31-10 win over Washington State, had been listed as questionable in Wednesday’s initial player availability report. By Saturday, Boise State had officially ruled him out for the Pac-12 matchup at Albertsons Stadium, where kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Mountain time.
The third-year sophomore carried the ball 10 times for 64 yards and a touchdown against the Cougars. For the season, he has 75 carries for 418 yards and five total touchdowns.
His absence should mean a heavier workload for Dylan Riley, who enters the game as the Pac-12’s leading rusher. Riley has 140 carries for 963 yards and nine total touchdowns.
Rasmussen’s loss is another blow up front. He started Boise State’s first four games at left guard before suffering an undisclosed injury in the Broncos’ 32-7 road win over Western Michigan.
Head coach Spencer Danielson said Rasmussen could still return later in the season.
“We’ll see,” Danielson told local media on Thursday. “It’s not going to be anytime soon, but we’ll see. He’s a relentless competitor and hopefully we get him back at some point later in the year.”
The 6-foot-5, 300-pound Rasmussen arrived as a three-star prospect and 247Sports’ No. 3 overall player in Idaho out of Owyhee High School in 2023. He chose Boise State over offers from Air Force, Army and San Diego State. After redshirting in 2023, he played in 27 total games over the next two seasons as a reserve before winning the starting job in fall camp.
With Rasmussen sidelined, fourth-year lineman Jason Steele will make his fourth straight start at left guard. Steele, who is 6-foot-4 and 313 pounds, came into the fall with 12 career starts at center and left guard and opened the 2026 season as Boise State’s swing interior lineman.
“I am so proud of Jason Steele,” Danielson said last week. “Poured into his team, supported his team, continued to work his tail off, and now he’s a starter.
“When you continue to pound the rock and do what you’re supposed to, it works out. Sometimes not in the timing we want, that’s life.
But if you don’t give up, you reap the harvest. And Jason is reaping the harvest.”
Wide receiver Ben Ford and tight end Austin Terry are available for Saturday’s game, and no other Broncos appeared on the game day player availability report.

Boise State's Favorite Status Suddenly Feels Less Comfortable Than Expected
Boise State heads into its matchup with Texas State carrying the kind of profile that usually brings confidence with it. The Broncos are riding a six-game winning streak and opened as a 12.5-point favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook, a number that reflected both their recent form and the expectation that they would control the game on the ground. Even so, this is not the sort of opponent that lets a favorite get too comfortable, especially with both teams showing up near the top of the rushing charts.
Texas State brings a fast-moving offense and enough balance to make the Broncos pay attention on every series, with quarterback Brad Jackson and running back Torrance Burgess Jr. driving much of what the Bobcats do. Boise State coach Spencer Danielson has already pointed to the strengths on both sides of the ball that make this a tricky test, and the market has noticed too, with the spread tightening before kickoff. For a team that has spent the week looking like the safer play, this one suddenly has a little more edge than the opening number suggested. [Read more 🡒]
Boise State Just Sent A Strong Late-Season Message To The Pac-12
Boise State made a loud late-season statement with a 4-0 win over Texas State, a result that locked up a spot in the Pac-12 Championship and kept the Broncos firmly in the title picture. After a scoreless opening half, Boise State found its rhythm and controlled the match from there, turning a tight game into a convincing road-like finish with all four goals coming after the break.
The defensive side was just as important, with Texas State managing only two shots on goal in the second half and Ava de Leest picking up her 10th shutout of the season. Now the Broncos have one more regular-season test in front of them, and the stakes are simple: a win over Washington State would give Boise State a share of the Pac-12 regular season crown. Boise States Playoff Grip Suddenly Looks More Fragile Than Fans Realize
Georgias win over Florida did more than shake up the SEC race. It also sent another ripple through the College Football Playoff picture, where Boise State is trying to protect its place in a field that still feels very much in motion. With conference title races and seed projections shifting week by week, the Broncos remain in the mix, but the path they thought they had is not as secure as it looked a short time ago.
For Boise State, the bigger issue is not just where the bracket stands today, but how quickly it can change once the next round of games hits. The projections still have the Broncos in position to matter, yet the margin for error is thin and the teams chasing them are not going away. Every result from here on out carries extra weight, and Boise States standing could look different again before long. [Read more 🡒]
