Boise State Gets Encouraging Maddux Madsen Update Before Colorado State

Boise State fans can breathe a sigh of relief as quarterback Maddux Madsen's knee injury appears less severe than feared, leaving his return prospects promising.

Boise State got the kind of update every team wants after a scare at quarterback: Maddux Madsen is being treated as day-to-day after injuring his left knee in Saturday’s 46-45 win over Texas State.

Madsen exited in the fourth quarter after absorbing a low hit to the knee, then spent time in the medical tent before being spotted on crutches with an ice pack wrapped around the same knee as the game wound down. For a moment, it looked like Boise State might be bracing for a much longer absence. Instead, the early read from the Broncos is far more encouraging.

“He's going to be back here soon,” Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said Monday. “He's going to be more day-to-day.

Really good to hear that it's not going to be long term. He's in really positive spirits.

And thank the good Lord that it's not serious.”

Danielson said MRI and test results came back better than expected after he initially feared Madsen could be sidelined for an extended stretch. The coach also made it clear how much the quarterback means to this team.

“Great news to make sure Maddux is not going to be out long term,” Danielson said. “It's going to be day-to-day, which is phenomenal for him and for our program. I think he's one of the best quarterbacks in the entire country.”

Madsen has been the engine behind Boise State’s 7-1 start and its No. 20 ranking in this week’s AP Poll. The fifth-year senior is putting together the best season of his career, completing 148 of 222 passes for 1,681 yards and 15 touchdowns against just one interception.

The Broncos also know they can survive if they have to lean on the next man up. Max Cutforth stepped in after Madsen went down and delivered a huge fourth quarter, throwing for 131 yards and three touchdowns to help fuel the comeback win. If Madsen can’t go Saturday at Colorado State, Cutforth will take the first-team reps and start, with freshman Cash Herrera next on the depth chart.

“Hats off to Max,” Danielson said. “Max came in and did a phenomenal job.

He came in in a dire moment for our team and did a phenomenal job. If Maddux isn't ready to go this weekend, we have full trust in Max.”

Danielson added that Madsen’s status for Saturday should become clearer soon.

“Feel really good that it's not going to be season ending,” Danielson said. “We'll find out more probably in the next 24-to-48 hours where it's truly at with Maddux for this weekend.”

Madsen has dealt with a knee issue before, missing three games late last season before returning to start both the Mountain West Championship Game and the LA Bowl. This time, Boise State is hoping the latest setback stays in the short-term category.

Boise State Brings A Brutal Mismatch Into Colorado State

Colorado States week-to-week reality has gotten bleak enough that Jim Mora spent part of his pregame availability spelling out just how steep the challenge is. The Rams have dropped five of their last six and sit last in the FBS in total defense, scoring defense and rushing defense, which is not exactly the backdrop you want when Boise State comes to town with one of the nations most punishing ground games.

Mora pointed directly to Dylan Riley as the engine of that attack, and he also noted what the Broncos have shown behind center when the depth chart gets tested. Boise States offense did not appear to lose its edge with Max Cutforth in the game, which only adds another layer to a matchup Colorado State badly needs to stabilize before it gets away from them early. Boise State Has One Clear Edge In A Crucial Pac-12 Test

Boise State heads into its Pac-12 matchup with Colorado State carrying a clear defensive advantage, even though both teams have been productive enough on offense to sit in the top half of the league in several categories. The Broncos have been especially stout against the run, and that strength stands out against a Colorado State offense that has kept pace in some areas but will be tested in ways it has not been all season.

The bigger question for Boise State is under center, where Maddux Madsen may be unavailable for the game. If that happens, Max Cutforth would be the next man up after a strong showing in the previous game, giving the Broncos a backup plan as they try to lean on their defense and keep control of a crucial conference test. Ashton Jeantys Raiders Role Just Raised A Bigger Question

Ashton Jeantys usage in Las Vegas turned heads in Sundays 38-33 win over the Jets, but the box score only told part of the story. The former Boise State standout finished with just two carries for nine yards, a career low on the ground, yet still made an impact as a receiver with three catches for 64 yards, showing how the Raiders found ways to keep him involved even in a lighter rushing role.

What makes the split worth watching is what it could mean going forward for a player who has been one of the more closely tracked former Broncos in the NFL. Week 8 also brought a broader snapshot of Boise State alumni around the league, but Jeantys role stands out because it leaves open a bigger question about how Las Vegas plans to deploy him as the season moves on.
