Boise State fans heading to Albertsons Stadium this season will find more than a new North End Zone waiting for them. The menu has gotten a refresh too, and the latest batch of stadium eats brings everything from familiar game-day staples to a few curveballs.
For the first time, Boise State will also open a concession stand directly beneath the south end stands, giving fans the usual lineup of hot dogs, burgers, sodas and beers. On the north end, five new food carts will serve all fans on the concourse, taking advantage of the new 37,000-square-foot open space that links the east and west sides of the stadium.
There’s even a new souvenir angle for anyone buying food that comes in a basket: it will be served in a stadium bowl featuring Boise State’s blue turf surrounded by orange bleachers.
But the real question is what’s worth ordering. After sampling the new items, Idaho Statesman reporter Shaun Goodwin put together a ranking of Boise State’s fresh options.
At No. 7 is Loaded Nachos. They’re solid, but also pretty straightforward - standard loaded nachos, just served in the souvenir container you can keep after the game.
No. 6 is the Bronco Jr. Double Cheeseburger.
Like the nachos, it lands in the middle because it’s dependable rather than flashy. The cheeseburger and regular hamburger are made with local meat from Double R Ranch, and Boise State dining chef Roland Cruz said the cheeseburgers are a “value” option for fans.
The first real twist shows up at No. 5 with the Cheeto Dog. The Double R Ranch beef hot dog is topped with nacho cheese sauce and Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, creating a bite that mixes crunch, spice and the usual hot dog softness.
No. 4 is the Fiesta Chicken Bowl, which stands out for being the healthiest-looking entry in the group. It starts with jasmine rice and layers on chicken tinga, roasted corn salsa, pico de gallo, avocado crema and sliced jalapeños. Even with the jalapeños and chicken tinga, it doesn’t come off as overly spicy.
The Chili Cheese Dog checks in at No. 3, and the chili is the difference-maker. It turns a basic hot dog into something fuller and more flavorful, with cheese sauce and diced white onion available as well. That one sounds especially right for a cold November game against Oregon State.
No. 2 belongs to the BBQ Bacon Dog, which gets the edge over the chili version simply because it has bacon. The hot dog comes topped with bacon, BBQ sauce and crispy, diced-up onion straws, to the point where it could almost pass for a BBQ bacon burger.
And at No. 1, the quesabirria tacos take the crown. They were also Cruz’s favorite.
The meat is tender and rich, finished with cilantro and onion, and the tacos come with a small bowl of the red broth used in cooking the quesabirria and for dipping. Just maybe keep the sauce under control if you’re celebrating a touchdown.
