Boise State fans are about to hear Spencer Danielson in a different setting Saturday, when the Broncos’ head coach is mic’d up for the matchup against Memphis at Albertsons Stadium.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. Mountain time, and the broadcast will give viewers a closer look at how Danielson operates on the sideline. The 37-year-old said Thursday he expects the experience to be a new one, but not one that changes who he is.
“Hopefully it’s something that I just forget about and keep it rolling,” he said on Thursday. “But I think it’s gonna be good.”
The mic’d-up opportunity comes through “ Pac-12 Field Pass,” which is aiming to add another layer to the TV experience by putting microphones on student-athletes and coaches during the season. Saturday may not be the only time Danielson is featured that way this year.
What fans hear probably won’t sound like the usual sideline outburst. Danielson has been open about how central religion is to him, and he said that will show up in what comes through the broadcast.
“I pray a lot during the game. I mean, that’s who I am.
So people are going to be like, ‘Whoa, this is what’s happening?’” Danielson said.
“So I think it’s always good for fans to have a look into kind of what’s happening.”
He also said the moment offers a chance for people to see the “culture” inside Boise State’s program. Danielson described the Pac-12’s approach as “cutting edge,” and said that fits the way he wants the Broncos to operate.
“It’s definitely something that is probably going to take a little bit getting used to,” Danielson said. “But no, not going to change one bit of who I am, and people are going to see kind of what goes down.”
Boise State enters the game at 0-1 overall and 0-0 in conference play, while Memphis is 2-0 and 0-0. The Tigers lead the series 1-0.
The game will be played at Albertsons Stadium, which seats 34,423 and has a turf surface. Radio coverage is on KBOI 670-AM and KBOI 93.1-FM, as well as Sirius XM Channel 84 with Bob Behler and Pete Cavender.
