Boise State Enters Pac-12 Opener With One Big Offensive Worry

Injuries shake up the lineup as Boise State braces for their Pac-12 debut against Utah State, urging the Broncos to embrace a "next man up" mentality.

Boise State will be missing two offensive starters when it opens Pac-12 play Saturday night against Utah State.

Starting left guard Carson Rasmussen and deep threat receiver Cam Bates were both ruled out for the Broncos’ matchup with the Aggies at Albertsons Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. Mountain time.

Boise State’s game day availability report listed five total Broncos as out. Along with Rasmussen and Bates, the team will also be without rotation linebacker Logan Brantley, backup linebacker Sam Brooks and backup receiver Darren Morris.

Running back Sire Gaines is the one to watch. He missed last week’s game against Western Michigan with what appeared to be a wrist injury, but he remains a game-time decision for Saturday.

“We got some guys banged up in the game, got some guys banged up in practice,” Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson told local media on Thursday. “We talk about carry the flag.

We’re going to have guys out this week. Utah State is going to have guys out this week.

It’s next man up, carry the flag.”

Rasmussen, a fourth-year junior, started the first four games at left guard. With him out, Danielson said the Broncos are likely to work Zander Esty and Jason Steele at that spot.

“(Rasmussen) and Jason Steele are the two that we’re working through in practice,” Danielson said. “Those are our next two best guys that do a really good job. … We’re probably going to end up playing both of them, and we’re going to have a couple different rotations we’re working through on the offensive line.”

Gaines has been a key piece for Boise State so far, piling up 45 carries for 234 yards and three total touchdowns. His best outing came against South Dakota, when he ran for a season-high 102 yards on 17 carries before leaving in the fourth quarter with the injury.

“He’s doing better,” Danielson said of Gaines. “He was able to practice this week.

Still not 100 percent, but he’s been able to practice. … He’s an absolute warrior.

He spoke to the team this morning on Mentality Thursday, did a phenomenal job speaking to the team. He’s not quite 100 percent yet, but he’s a lot closer than he was at this time last week.”

Bates has played in four games and has eight catches for 59 yards and two touchdowns. He also broke a game open on special teams with a 72-yard punt return touchdown against Memphis.

Brantley has been part of the linebacker rotation with Jake Ripp and is tied with Jaden Mickey for fifth on the team with 12 total tackles. Morris has fallen down the receiver depth chart behind Bates, Rasean Jones, Akeem Wright, Ben Ford and others, and has one reception for five yards this season.

Utah State will also be shorthanded. Seven Aggies players are expected to sit out Saturday, including star linebacker Harrison Taggart.

Boise State Faces A Huge Fresno State Test With Offense In Doubt

Boise State heads into Saturdays meeting with Fresno State carrying more uncertainty on offense than it usually likes this late in the season. The Broncos may be without four key pieces, with starting running back Dylan Riley and leading receiver Rasean Jones both leaving the previous game hurt, while starting receiver Cam Bates and second running back Sire Gaines did not play last week.

That puts a lot of pressure on the next wave of skill players if those four remain unavailable. Harry Stewart III and Juelz Goff are expected to be ready for bigger roles if needed, but Boise States ability to keep its offense on schedule against a dangerous Fresno State test could hinge on who is actually able to suit up. Boise State Enters Fresno State Showdown With Pac-12 Control At Stake

Boise State heads into its matchup with Fresno State riding four straight wins and carrying real leverage in the Pac-12 race. The Broncos have settled into a groove on both sides of the ball, and Dylan Rileys emergence as the nations rushing leader has become one of the clearest reasons they have climbed into this position. With the standings tightening around them, this is the kind of game that can shape the rest of the league picture in a hurry.

Fresno State has long been one of the programs that can make life difficult in this spot, which only raises the stakes for Boise State on the road. Beyond the headline result, the game will also shine a light on how Boise State handles its personnel and coaching choices under pressure, because the margin for error narrows when control of the conference is on the line. A strong showing would deepen the Broncos hold on the race, while anything less keeps the door open for the pack behind them. [Read more 🡒]

Boise State Heads Into Fresno With Rivalry Pressure Building

Boise State heads into Fresno carrying more than just a road test. The Broncos have dropped the last three meetings in the rivalry, and head coach Spencer Danielson made clear this week that the recent run has added some edge to a matchup that already comes with plenty of history. With an 8:30 p.m. kickoff set for Valley Childrens Stadium, the trip brings the kind of late-night atmosphere and pressure that tends to sharpen the stakes even before the first snap.

Danielson pointed to the need for better defensive consistency as Boise State tries to change the recent pattern. He also gave Fresno State its due, calling it a strong program backed by a passionate fan base, which is part of what makes this matchup feel bigger than a standard conference game. For Boise State, it is a chance to steady itself in a rivalry that has tilted the wrong way lately, and to do it in one of the more difficult settings on the schedule. [Read more 🡒]
