DJ Lagway Sends Baylor A Clear Message Before Iowa State

Deck: As Baylor gears up to face Iowa State, DJ Lagway shares his insights on leadership, preparation, and the team's focus on consistent performance.

DJ Lagway had plenty to say after Florida’s win over UCF, and the common thread running through his comments was simple: keep stacking good days, keep trusting the people around him, and keep the offense moving forward.

When asked about what it takes to keep building on a victory, Lagway pointed straight to the daily work.

DJ Lagway: "Yeah, we just gotta continue to stack days. Continue to, I always say play the game.

Play the game on Monday so you can get on the field. On Saturday, you just already rehearsed it.

So just being intentional throughout the week, I feel like that's how we replicate it."

He also framed his job in bigger terms than just his own performance. For Lagway, it’s about helping the whole offense function at a higher level.

DJ Lagway: "Yeah, yes, sir. You try to always, ultimate goal is come out there playing free, but my biggest thing is just trying to elevate the guys around me, being a great leader and a great motivator, and just doing my job, and relying on the other ten players around me to do their job and trusting that they will, and that's the biggest thing."

That trust came up again when he talked about the group around him, and he didn’t shy away from the rough edges either.

DJ Lagway: "No, sir, not at all. I trust all of my guys.

I trust everybody that's on that field with me. I know they're gonna die for me out there, I'm gonna do the same thing for them.

It's just about, we just gotta play more consistently altogether as an offensive group. I feel like we had a lot of penalties at the end that shouldn't be there, and we just gotta play better, clean football.

We still got a lot more meat on the bone, and I'm just excited to continue to get better with these great group of guys."

Lagway also said he feels good physically and is ready to run whatever the staff puts in front of him.

DJ Lagway: "Yeah, I'm feeling good. Whatever coach has for us, whatever coach has designed for us, I'm gonna execute it to my fullest ability."

And when the conversation turned to Coach Spav, Lagway had nothing but praise for the way he handles the offense and adjusts on the fly.

DJ Lagway: "I feel like Coach Spav, he's always the same guy every single day. Just his ability, just to adapt and to work to what the game plan is or isn't, his ability to change on the run, that's what I love about him.

He doesn't just stick to what we came in through the week. If it's not working, he's gonna change it up, try to find something, and that's what I love about him.

But Coach Spav, he's the same guy every single day, and we all respect him in the building. We're thankful for him to have him as a coach."

That kind of buy-in from the quarterback is exactly the sort of thing an offense wants to hear. Lagway’s comments made it clear that the confidence in the room is real, and that the group sees both the positives from the UCF game and the areas that still need cleaning up.

Baylor Suddenly Has Real Momentum With A Bigger Test Now Ahead

Baylors 41-9 win over UCF gave the program a much-needed lift under interim head coach Joe Klanderman, and it also pushed the Bears to 5-3, leaving them one victory away from bowl eligibility. The result did more than just settle things down for a day. It nudged Baylor forward in the national conversation, even if the Bears are still sitting outside the Associated Press Top 25.

Now comes the part that will say a lot more about where this team really stands. Baylor heads into its homecoming game against Iowa State with momentum and a clearer path toward a postseason berth, but the margin for error is still thin. The Bears have improved in the eyes of The Athletic and CBS Sports, and the next test should show whether this recent surge is a true turning point or just a brief run of good results. [Read more 🡒]

Baylor's New-Look Attack Faces An Early Test At Home

Baylors season-opening homestand rolls on with a visit from Central Arkansas, giving the Bears another early chance to sort out a new-look attack in front of their home crowd. The opener against FDU offered a promising first glimpse, with Taliah Scott pacing the scoring and Trinity Turner making an immediate imprint in her debut by piling up assists, the kind of distribution Baylor will need as it settles into the season.

The Bears also bring more than momentum into this one. They are carrying preseason ranking buzz and a home assist streak that leads the nation, two signs that the ball movement and spacing in Waco remain central to how this team wants to play. Even early in the year, this is the sort of matchup that can reveal whether Baylors revamped pieces are already clicking or still in the process of finding their rhythm. [Read more 🡒]

Baylor Volleyball Gets Its Chance To Answer Kansas On The Road

No. 24 Baylor volleyball gets another crack at one of the Big 12s tougher road tests Thursday when it heads to Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena to face No. 15 Kansas on ESPN+. It is the kind of matchup that can say plenty about where the Bears stand in the league race, especially with both teams carrying rankings into a late-season meeting that figures to draw plenty of attention.

Baylor has been working through a stretch that has already offered a clearer picture of its form, and this trip gives the Bears a chance to measure themselves again against a top opponent away from home. The schedule does not ease up much from there, either, with Kansas State next and a home date against BYU coming soon after, giving Baylor little time to settle in before the next round of meaningful conference volleyball.
