Baylor opened fall camp with two of its biggest offseason additions still stuck in limbo, and Dave Aranda didn’t hide how messy that reality has become.
The Bears brought in defensive tackle Hosea Wheeler to help stabilize the middle of the defense after last season’s struggles, while Yakiri Walker was expected to be part of the offensive line plans. Now both players are tied up in eligibility questions, leaving Baylor to sort through a situation that has shifted quickly and late.
Walker’s case has already run its course. What had been a path toward becoming a potential starting offensive lineman turned into a different role entirely, and Aranda said the move to the staff had been discussed well before the verdict came down.
“Yeah, Yakiri, that was something in the kind of the planning of, hey, this was going to be the next step with, you know, getting a lawyer and and taking this to making this a court case and taking it to a judge,” Aranda said.
“The talk then was, hey, if it didn't work out, what's our plan? Because at that point, the supplemental draft or the talk of the supplemental draft had come and gone.
And he brought up coaching that he wanted to coach. And so that was something that we agreed to and wanted to do if we didn't get the verdict that we wanted.”
With Walker’s decision settled against him, he’s now on the coaching staff as an analyst, with a possible eye on entering the 2027 NFL Draft.
That leaves Baylor searching again for help at the pivot spot in the middle of the offensive line.
Wheeler’s situation is still unresolved, and that uncertainty hangs over a defense that needs him badly. He arrived as the headline addition on that side of the ball, bringing size in the middle and the kind of championship experience Baylor hoped would matter after he spent last season with the Indiana Hoosiers.
For now, though, his status won’t be known until an August 11 hearing that will decide his eligibility for the 2026 season.
Aranda said the lack of clarity makes the whole thing difficult to manage from the outside.
“And then with all of it, you know, with Hosea, we're still it's difficult with all of it because you can't really you can't assert yourself. You can't be in the middle to kind of stay updates. And so there's not a lot of truthfully, just not a lot of input coming to me,” Aranda said.
“And it's not really a place where I can go and ask about it either. So it's very, you know, we very much want Hosea to be on this team and contribute. And so it's just a weird space thing is a weird space for him, you know, to lead and to bring the energy and do all of it, not knowing if this is the last day or the whatever else, you know.”
Even with that uncertainty, Baylor is leaning on both players in different ways while the season gets close. Aranda said they’re helping off the field if they can’t ultimately help on it when the games start.
“And so, yeah, they're right now. This is where we're at. And I credit both Yakiri and Hosea and their families for going at it in a real kind of class way, because it's we're right up to the to starting everything off and to get stuff that's really late like this is a big mental lift,” Aranda said.
