Joey Porter Jr.’s time with the Steelers has come to an abrupt end before it ever got rolling in 2026, with Pittsburgh finalizing a deal to send the 26-year-old cornerback to Dallas, according to The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero.
Porter had not appeared in a game for the Steelers this season. Ahead of Thursday’s matchup with the Browns, Pittsburgh listed him as out with the designation of “NIR (not injury related)/conditioning/back.” He also missed training camp because of a back injury and had been working his way back into game shape.
Now the Cowboys will be the team trying to get him onto the field for the first time this year.
The return for Pittsburgh is a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick, according to The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones. Jordan Schultz reported that the Steelers felt they had “no choice” but to move Porter, and that the Lions and Giants had also expressed interest in a trade.
As for Porter’s future in Dallas, Schultz said the Cowboys will “not be immediately extending” his contract. The plan, he reported, is to get him playing first and let the contract situation “take care of itself from there.”
Porter is in the final year of his rookie deal and is making just under $4 million. He had been seeking an extension from the Steelers during the offseason, but the sides couldn’t reach an agreement. Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan also made it clear those talks would not continue once the season began.
Porter’s 2025 season line with Pittsburgh included 14 games, 52 tackles, 35 solo stops, 17 assists, 14 passes defended and one interception.

Baylor XC Gets An Unexpected Test After Travel Plans Fall Apart
A canceled flight sent Baylors mens and womens cross country teams in a new direction this week, changing their plans from a trip to Terre Haute, Indiana, to a run at the 38th annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The switch turned into an unexpected but workable test, with both squads still getting a competitive midseason meet against several regional programs as they continue to build toward the rest of the schedule.
The men will line up for an 8K and the women for a 5K, and Baylor will field a full mens team for the second time this season while several key runners also make appearances. Even with the late travel shakeup, the Bears still have a stretch of important racing ahead, with upcoming events in College Station and Stillwater offering more chances to settle into form as the season moves on. Baylor Heads To Tempe With Familiar Problems Ready To Define This Game
Baylor heads into a late-night trip to Tempe with a familiar set of questions hanging over the matchup. The Bears will have to sort out their defense against Arizona State quarterback Cutter Boley, while also trying to get cleaner play from a group that has been asked to carry too much of the load in recent weeks.
On the other side of the ball, Baylor needs steadier work from DJ Lagway, a more reliable push from the receiving corps and better answers on special teams if it wants to keep pace in a game that could hinge on small margins. Third-down execution and the run game remain central concerns, and those are the kinds of issues that tend to travel with a team until they get solved. [Read more 🡒]
Baylor Faces An Early Test With Lineup Decisions Still In Focus
Baylor mens golf heads to Dallas this weekend for its next early-season measuring stick, taking part in the Trinity Forest Invitational from Oct. 4-6 at Trinity Forest Golf Club. The field is a strong one, with 16 teams on the schedule and several nationally ranked programs in the mix, giving the Bears a chance to see where they stack up well before the season settles into its rhythm.
The lineup Baylor sends out includes Alex Heard, Jonas Appel, Chase Yenser, Tyler Sanford and Davis Ovard, a group that gives the Bears some flexibility as they continue sorting through the best combination. Play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. CT on Sunday, with live scoring available online, so this first weekend in Dallas should offer an early look at both the teams depth and the decisions still taking shape.
