Maridoe Collegiate Day 1: Baylor Holds Strong in Challenging Conditions
In the heart of Carrollton, Texas, the Baylor Bears showed resilience on the first day of the Maridoe Collegiate. Navigating the challenging course, they ended the day in fourth place, outpacing a couple of top-20 teams.
Baylor started strong with a 1-over 289 in the morning. However, as the winds picked up, the afternoon proved tougher, pushing their score to a 21-over 309. Despite the conditions, they remain in a competitive position heading into the final round.
Seventh-ranked Oklahoma State set the pace with an even-par 576, creating a 14-shot cushion over ninth-ranked Arizona State. The host team, North Texas, sits in third, just ahead of Baylor, followed by Oklahoma and Alabama.
Oklahoma State's dominance was highlighted by three players finishing under par, with Ethan Fang leading the charge at 4-under 140. For Baylor, Alex Heard, a transfer from UConn, shone brightly. His 1-under 71 in the morning placed him tied for seventh at 1-over 145, just five shots from the top.
Senior Jonas Appel matched Heard's six birdies, ending the day tied for 17th at 5-over 149. Junior Davis Ovard had a rollercoaster day, opening with a promising 2-under 70 but slipping with an 8-over 80 in the afternoon.
Evan Vo and Sam Dossey rounded out Baylor's lineup, tied for 40th and 47th respectively. Freshman Tyler Sanford, competing as an individual, delivered a solid 4-over 76 in the afternoon, tying Appel for Baylor's second-best score and moving to 38th overall.
