Baylors New-Look Roster Gave Fans An Encouraging First Glimpse

Baylor's men's basketball team dominated their season opener against Northwestern State with a commanding 87-65 victory, showcasing strong performances from both newcomers and veterans.

Baylor wasted no time setting the tone in its season opener Monday night, rolling past Northwestern State 87-65 at Foster Pavilion behind a fast start, a balanced scoring attack and a defense that never let the Demons get comfortable.

The Bears led from start to finish and were already up 18 at halftime. Northwestern State never got closer than 15 in the second half, even after Baylor’s offense cooled off a bit after the break. Still, the margin stayed firm all night, and the Bears finished with a comfortable wire-to-wire win.

Sophomore guard Kayden Mingo and junior guard Brett Decker Jr. shared the scoring lead with 17 points each, while freshman guard Dylan Mingo turned in a stat-sheet line that jumped off the page: 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Freshman forward Elijah Williams added 11 points in his collegiate debut, giving Baylor four players in double figures.

Decker Jr. did most of his damage from long range, knocking down five threes. That gave him his 11th career game with five or more made triples. Baylor hit nine threes as a team, shot 50% from deep in the first half and finished with a 60% field-goal mark before halftime.

The Bears also controlled the glass, outrebounding Northwestern State 49-35, and forced 16 turnovers. More than half of those giveaways came via steals, with Baylor swiping the ball nine times. The Demons shot just 22% from three, going 5-for-23.

Baylor came out sharp right away, jumping to a 14-4 lead by the first media timeout. Dylan Mingo was in the middle of it from the jump, picking off passes and scoring six early points. After the first stoppage, Decker Jr. caught fire, hitting his first three shots, including two from deep, as the Bears stretched the lead to 21-4.

Dylan Mingo kept making life miserable for Northwestern State on both ends, and Decker Jr. became the first Bear into double figures with another three at the 9:39 mark. Baylor then ripped off an 11-0 run over nearly three minutes to push the margin to 41-17. The Bears later led 46-26 at the under-4 timeout before taking a 50-32 edge into halftime.

Kayden Mingo had 10 points by the break on 4-of-8 shooting, and Dylan Mingo had already piled up steals and playmaking while Baylor kept the pressure on. The second half was slower on both sides, but the Demons never seriously threatened. Baylor answered an 8-0 Northwestern State run with a pair of free throws from junior guard Isaac Williams IV, then Elijah Williams finished an inbounds play with a dunk to make it 67-50.

Decker Jr. closed the door with his fourth and fifth threes of the night, pushing Baylor in front 80-58 with 3:46 left. Kayden Mingo added five straight points late, and sophomore forward Maikcol Perez scored the first points of his career to finish things off.

The win moved Baylor to 21-3 in season openers under 24th-year head coach Scott Drew. It was also the Bears’ eighth win in their last nine season openers, their ninth straight home opener victory and their first wire-to-wire win since Jan. 13, 2026, at Oklahoma State.

There were plenty of firsts mixed into the night, too. Ten Bears made their Baylor debuts: Juslin Bodo Bodo, Isaac Celiscar, Evan Chatman, Brett Decker Jr., Andre Iguodala II, Dylan Mingo, Kayden Mingo, Maikcol Perez, Mayo Soyoye and Elijah Williams. Five players made their collegiate debuts, and Dylan Mingo and Elijah Williams both earned their first career starts.

Drew praised Dylan Mingo’s all-around debut, saying, "Dylan's stat sheet-stuffing does a lot of great things, and his defense does great things too, so he is usually guarding the other team’s best player. He's an all-conference level defender and really does a good job passing the ball. Our first three (exhibition) games he had 16 assists on one turnover, which shows he does a really good job facilitating the ball too."

Decker Jr. had similar praise for his freshman teammate, saying, "You can count on him any time, any part of the game. He's a freshman in his first game, so he's going to keep getting better and better. It's going to be an exciting season."

And Dylan Mingo, asked about Decker Jr.’s shooting, said, "He definitely ranks first in shooting, at least the best I’ve played with. It’s kind of fun because that’s how you just rack up assists - if you want to get assists, pass the ball to Brett Decker. It’s fun playing with him and it’s fun building a connection with him."

Baylor now turns to Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday afternoon to continue its three-game homestand. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. at Foster Pavilion in Waco.

Baylor Exposed Problems At UCF That Just Got Even Worse

Baylors 41-9 win at UCF did more than hand the Knights a lopsided loss. It also put a spotlight on problems that were already simmering, from an offense that never found the end zone for the first time this season to a defense that gave up a season-high 503 yards. Scott Frost and defensive coordinator Alex Grinch both pointed to the same broad issues afterward, with the offensive line struggling to hold up and the defense dealing with communication breakdowns that Baylor was able to exploit.

The concern for UCF has only deepened with the injury news that followed. Owen Spell and RJ Jackson Jr. are both done for the season, leaving the Knights to sort through a difficult stretch with fewer answers and less margin for error. For a team already trying to clean up execution on both sides of the ball, the Baylor game looked less like an outlier than a warning sign. [Read more 🡒]

Baylor Fans Have Plenty To Watch In The NFL Right Now

Baylor fans have had plenty of familiar names to track across the NFL schedule the past two weeks, with several former Bears getting game action in Weeks Seven and Eight. James Lynch delivered a notable moment with the first interception of his career, while Terrel Bernard turned in a strong outing for the Buffalo Bills, giving Baylor supporters a little something extra to follow beyond the college game.

The injury side of the ledger is less encouraging, though, as Jalen Pitre and Tyquan Thornton are still sidelined. Pitres return remains uncertain, and Thornton is hoping to work his way back in time for the playoffs, leaving Baylor fans to keep one eye on the weekly box scores and another on the injury reports. Baylor Suddenly Has Real Momentum With A Bigger Test Now Ahead

Baylors most convincing performance of the season came at just the right time, with the Bears rolling past UCF 41-9 under interim head coach Joe Klanderman. The win pushed Baylor to 5-3 and put the program within one victory of bowl eligibility, a useful marker for a team that has spent much of the fall trying to steady itself and find some traction.

Even with the surge, Baylor is still outside the Associated Press Top 25, though the Bears have climbed in both The Athletic and CBS Sports rankings. The next step is a tougher one, with Iowa State coming to Waco for homecoming and offering a chance to show the recent momentum is more than a one-game spike. [Read more 🡒]
