The simplest reason to tune in is the one that never really gets old: football is back. That means tailgating, chicken wings, cold drinks, packed stands, and all the noise that comes with a fresh season. It also means the nervous pauses, the gasp when a deep ball hangs in the air, and the eruption when a field goal splits the uprights.
There’s also the quarterback spotlight. DJ Lagway has drawn plenty of hype, including from this writer, and now the conversation shifts from buzz to proof. NFL scouts have been taking notice, and for some Baylor fans, this will be the first chance to watch him in action.
Hosea Wheeler brings another layer of intrigue. The defensive lineman arrived through the transfer portal, and this game should offer a clear look at whether he can help lift a Baylor front that was less than stellar against Auburn last season. The bigger question is whether Wheeler’s experience can raise the level of play across the line and help the Bears get opposing offenses off the field and out of the end-zone.
Beyond the individual names, there’s the larger possibility that Baylor could walk away with a statement win. Beating a favored Auburn team would do more than add a mark in the win column; it would give the Bears a chance to silence doubters right out of the gate. A Week 1 victory would feel like the first real stop on the Baylor bandwagon.
There’s plenty of curiosity, too, about how Baylor handles third and fourth down this season. The Bears’ numbers there were less than stellar a year ago, and last season’s Auburn game turned on a few failed chances, including 3/6 of their fourth down conversion attempts ending in a turnover-on-downs. That part of the game alone could tell us a lot.
Of course, Dave Aranda is not shy about taking risks. The fourth-down decisions bring their own kind of theater, and that edge is part of what makes this game so watchable. A team willing to go for it on 4th and 9 in its own territory is never short on drama.
And really, that circles back to the biggest reason of all: the offseason is almost over. All the speculation, the debates, the anticipation - it’s all been building toward Baylor against Auburn, and the college football season getting underway again. That’s about as must-see as it gets.
