The college football coaching carousel is finally starting to pick up speed, and Baylor’s opening is already drawing a big name into the conversation.
After NC State and Baylor both moved on from their head coaches, the ripple effect could be significant. On3’s Pete Nakos took a first look at possible Baylor targets, and one name stood out immediately: USC’s Lincoln Riley.
Riley’s situation in Los Angeles has become part of the storyline. USC dropped its game at Wisconsin on Saturday night, falling to 6-2, and Nakos pointed out that the stretch ahead does not get any easier. The Trojans still have Ohio State, Indiana and UCLA left on the schedule, and a 7-5 finish is on the table.
“How Riley finishes out the season will be critical for his future in Los Angeles. Could he look around at the job market if there are openings in Texas?” Nakos added.
“He has the deep Texas roots and the offensive pedigree that Baylor is expected to be looking for in its search.”
USC made a major investment when it landed Riley from Oklahoma. Fox Sports reported that he signed a 10-year, $110 million contract, and the deal also came with perks such as access to a private jet. CBS Sports reported that Riley’s buyout is around $70 million.
That kind of money makes any move complicated, but the tension around USC matters here. If Riley feels the pressure building, a new job could theoretically give him an exit before USC decides to make one for him.
Still, the fit is not exactly obvious on paper. Leaving USC for Baylor would be a surprising turn, especially with USC sitting above Baylor on the job ladder. But the possibility is out there, and Riley has now become one of the names attached to the Bears’ search.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Max Olson and Eli Lederman also brought up Riley as a Baylor option. They described the situation this way on Sunday:
“His future at USC is murky at best, and a return to his home state and a league where he had historic success could be a smart exit strategy,” Rittenberg, Olson and Lederman noted on Sunday.
“Riley wouldn't have the same resources he enjoys at USC, but if he can secure financial buy-in from Baylor, he could soon position the Bears as Big 12/CFP contenders.”
For now, it’s just a name on a list. But with Baylor open and USC under the microscope, Riley is once again in the middle of the coaching chatter.

Baylor WBB Showed One Encouraging Sign Fans Will Notice Fast
Baylors exhibition win over West Texas A&M offered the kind of early October look that can make a fan base feel a little better about what comes next. The Bears rolled to a 96-56 victory at the Paul and Alejandra Foster Pavilion, and the most eye-catching part was how often they turned defense into offense. Baylor forced 30 turnovers and turned those mistakes into 37 points, a sharp sign that the pressure and pace were already creating problems for an opponent.
The depth was encouraging, too, with six Baylor players finishing in double figures in a game that never felt especially close. Exhibition results do come with the usual caveats, but this was still the sort of performance that can travel into the regular season if the Bears can keep the same energy and ball pressure. Their official opener arrives Nov. 2 against FDU, giving them a little time to build on a start that clearly showed a few things clicking early. [Read more 🡒]
Baylor's Next Coaching Hire Carries A Standard Fans Can't Ignore
Baylors football program is back in the market for a new leader after athletic director Doug McNamee announced the dismissal of Dave Aranda following the loss to Kansas. Aranda leaves Waco with an even 40-40 record, a mark that captures both the promise and the frustration of a tenure that never fully settled into the kind of week-to-week consistency the program wanted.
Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman has been elevated to interim head coach for the rest of the season, while McNamee begins the search for a permanent replacement. The standard is clear: Baylor wants a coach who can turn the program into a steadier winner, and the next hire will be judged against that expectation from the start. [Read more 🡒]
RGIII Just Entered Baylors Coaching Search Conversation
Robert Griffin III has jumped into Baylors coaching search in a way few former players ever do, making clear he wants to be considered for the job after Dave Arandas firing. Griffin said he has already spoken with Baylors athletic director, and he has even been offering names of his own as the Bears sort through a search that could shape the programs next era.
It is a striking turn for a former Baylor star with no college or NFL coaching experience, but Griffin has made the case that he could still thrive on the sideline in Waco. He has pointed to candidates such as Spencer Danielson, Jeff Traylor and Lincoln Riley as part of the broader conversation, while also putting himself squarely in the picture and adding another unexpected wrinkle to a search that was already drawing plenty of attention.
