Baylor appears headed into Week 3 without DJ Lagway again.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that the Bears view their starting quarterback as “doubtful” for Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech because of the ankle injury he picked up in the season opener. If that holds, third-year quarterback Nate Bennett will be in line for his second career start.
Lagway has been dealing with a high-ankle sprain since the first quarter of Baylor’s 17-16 loss to Auburn. He stayed in that game, but the injury was obvious the rest of the way as he played with a bulky wrap over his right foot and ankle.
Nearly two weeks later, Baylor still may not have him ready to go, which leaves real uncertainty about when he’ll be back and how much of his usual mobility he’ll have once he returns.
That concern lines up with a report from On3.com’s Pete Nakos last week, which suggested Baylor might keep Lagway out until conference play begins. Nakos wrote:
"Sources tell On3 that quarterback DJ Lagway suffered a high-ankle sprain in the loss to Auburn. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda said earlier this week that the quarterback is day-to-day, and a source told On3 later in the week that Lagway has been trying to fight through it. Sources have said the quarterback is viewed as doubtful against Prairie View A&M, especially with Big 12 play starting in two weeks against Colorado."
Baylor opens Big 12 play in Week 4 against Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes.
For now, Bennett looks like the man for Saturday. He handled his first real action well enough, finishing 24 of 36 for three touchdown passes and adding another score on a 17-yard run. He also threw two turnovers, and the challenge ahead is different: Louisiana Tech should be a tougher test than the Bears saw last week.
Even so, Bennett at least has game reps under his belt. Baylor pulled him and the starters in the second half once the game was out of reach, but that extended run should leave him better prepared for this week’s matchup in Waco.
