Baylor gets one last non-conference test before Big 12 play begins, and this one comes with a few familiar questions still hanging over the Bears.
After last week’s 44-3 win over Prairie View A&M, Baylor sits at 1-1 and now turns to Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs gave LSU a competitive fight last week before eventually falling to a much stronger opponent, and Baylor is hoping to show it can separate itself in similar fashion. That said, the Bears are still dealing with the same issue that has shadowed the start of the season: they are not at full strength.
DJ Lagway, Baylor’s star quarterback, told Baylor on SI that he will be back next week for the conference opener against Colorado. He could not say he would be available this week, which puts last week’s starter, Nate Bennett, back in line to lead the offense.
Bennett had a productive outing against Prairie View A&M, throwing for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns. But the performance also came with two interceptions, and Baylor quarterbacks combined for three picks in the game. That kind of sloppiness is part of what left Dave Aranda sounding less interested in the scoreboard and more focused on the details his team still has to clean up.
“I know locker room was a fun time, Aranda said. “On Saturday night, it was well deserved.
But there's a lot of things we got to get cleaned up. You know, one of the things that we've talked about quite a bit is being hard to kill.
And that's not making it easy for a team to beat us. And right now it's too easy to beat us with the penalties and the turnovers.
And we have to clean that up. Our identity needs to be the opposite of that, of giving those things to the opponent.
And so we're very focused on that."
The numbers from last week tell the story: three turnovers and nine penalties. That won’t cut it against the bigger names waiting on Baylor’s Big 12 schedule, and Aranda knows it would be a problem again this weekend if the Bears repeat those mistakes.
The same goes for the run game, which still hasn’t found much rhythm through two games. Aranda pointed to signs of progress from the backfield, but he also made clear that consistency is still the goal.
“I think our running backs are running physical,” Aranda said. “I thought Caden Knighten was much improved from the week previous, was really finishing runs and was hitting downhill.
I thought Caden on special teams really was impressive as well. Mike Turner has been impressive both weeks.
Dawson Pendergrass has been his old self, and you can count on four yards every time he touches the ball. But we have to be consistent.”
With the final non-conference game of the season on deck, Baylor’s task is straightforward: clean up the mistakes, find some rhythm on offense, and handle business against Louisiana Tech.
