Baylor went into Wednesday hoping to come away with a huge win on the recruiting trail. Instead, the Bears watched one of their top targets make his choice somewhere else.
Five-star center Lewis Uvwo, one of the biggest names left in the 2027 cycle, committed to Providence rather than Baylor on decision day.
Uvwo had been a major priority for Scott Drew and his staff. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, product from Prolific Prep stands 6-foot-11 and 225 pounds, and 247Sports Composite has him ranked No. 7 overall in the class and as the No. 1 center.
Baylor had every reason to believe it could land him. Drew has signed a five-star in every class since 2021, and the Bears had been viewed as the favorite heading into Wednesday.
That track record included Dylan Mingo in the 2026 class after he decommitted from North Carolina. Mingo is expected to play alongside his brother Kayden this season.
What made Uvwo such an attractive target is easy to see. His 7-foot-6 wingspan gives him the kind of reach that changes games at the rim, and his defensive profile is already elite. Heading into next season, he was described as arguably the best freshman paint defender in basketball, a player who can block shots and anchor the lane from day one.
The offensive side is still a work in progress, but the tools are there for development. 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein called him “a truly elite defensive prospect” and laid out just how advanced the shot-blocking is.
"Uvwo is a truly elite defensive prospect. It starts with his physical tools.
Standing at 6-foot-10 with a nearly 7-foot-6 wingspan, he has massive length. More than that though, he’s also a tremendous athlete.
He runs, jumps, and changes direction with ease and fluidity... Uvwo’s ability to block shots is virtually unmatched in high school basketball.
He averaged 4.5 blocks per game in EYBL play, not only amassing whopping volume, but showing versatility in the way he can protect the rim.
"Offensively, he’s farther away and raw, but not without long-term tools to develop. His day one role will be as a rim-runner, lob threat, and offensive rebounder (2.8 per game).
He also has solid hands and touch though. He catches cleanly and may have some potential to develop facing the basket (61% free-throw shooter).
There are some flashes of footwork, but right now he’s not a decision-maker (0.4 assists vs. 1.1 turnovers) or someone you want to have the ball unless it’s immediately clear what he’s doing with it."
The scouting notes around Uvwo matched the buzz: massive length, extreme mobility for his size, twitchy athleticism, good hands, and a willingness to compete. Another note from the evaluation went even further, calling him the best shot-blocker in the country.
For Baylor, the miss sends the search for frontcourt help back to square one. The Bears are still looking for a big man to pair with Jamison, their top-40 guard, and Uvwo would have been a major answer to that need.
There is still a chance Baylor’s depth chart can stabilize if Juslin Bodo Bodo returns to Waco next season. But losing out on a player with Uvwo’s size and defensive upside is a tough blow all the same.

Baylor Already Has An Early WBB Concern Fans Will Notice
Baylors womens basketball team got its first taste of outside competition in a 85-64 exhibition loss to Texas at the Moody Center, and the result came with an early wrinkle fans will notice. Trinity Turner led the Bears with 20 points, while Reese Ross added 13 points and five rebounds, but Baylor never found enough consistency to keep pace with a Longhorns group that controlled the night.
Zya Vann set the tone for Texas with 18 points and a perfect shooting night from beyond the arc, hitting all six of her 3-point tries. For Baylor, the bigger concern was less about one score in October than the way the game unfolded, since exhibition results do not count but still reveal what needs work before the real season begins. Baylor Recruiting Fallout May Be Just Getting Started
Bryson Browns recruiting pivot is the latest reminder of how quickly Baylors future picture can change after a coaching shakeup. The three-star linebacker had already been part of the Bears 2027 class, and his decision to flip to Oklahoma State adds an early hit to a group that still includes 12 commitments and sits 72nd in the On3 rankings.
Browns change of heart is especially notable because he initially said Dave Arandas firing would not alter his commitment. Instead, the departure of the Baylor head coach has already started to ripple through the recruiting board, and the Bears may not be done feeling the effects as other prospects reassess where they fit in a program now searching for its next direction. Baylor Heads To UCF With Its Slide Facing A Real Test
Baylor heads into its Week 9 trip to UCF trying to stop a slide at the same time it runs into a team that just found its footing. The Bears had built momentum with a four-game winning streak before dropping their last two, while the Knights snapped a two-game losing streak with a double-overtime win over BYU and suddenly look a lot more settled heading into this one.
Keyone Jenkins has been at the center of that turnaround for UCF, and his play against BYU showed why the Knights can be a difficult matchup when they are getting quality quarterback production. For Baylor, the challenge is not just reversing its own recent downturn, but doing it against a team that is coming off a confidence-boosting result and will have plenty of reason to press its edge at home.
