No. 20 Baylor didn’t just show up in Lincoln on Friday night - it made top-ranked Nebraska work for every point it got.
The Bears became the first team this season to score at least 20 points in each set against the Huskers before Nebraska finally closed out a 3-0 win at Bob Devaney Sports Center. Baylor’s effort was the closest anyone has pushed the nation’s No. 1 team so far this year, and the third set went all the way to extra points.
Ksenia Rakhmanchik led the way for Baylor with 18 kills, continuing her run as the Bears’ go-to attacker. Nadiya Johnson added seven kills, Bailey Warren had six, and Victoria Davis was efficient all night with four kills on five swings for an .800 hitting percentage. Isabela Haggard finished with 22 assists and also served up two aces, while Morgan Madison anchored the back row with 15 digs.
Baylor opened with real bite, matching Nebraska early in the first set and staying close behind kills from Warren, Rakhmanchik and Johnson. The teams were tied 10-10 before the Huskers started to create a little separation. Even then, the Bears kept pressing, trimming the gap to 20-17 and 21-18 before Nebraska put together enough late points to take the set, 25-20.
The second set brought Baylor’s best offensive stretch of the night. After Nebraska scored first, the Bears ripped off four straight points, with three Rakhmanchik kills forcing a Husker timeout.
Baylor kept trading points from there and even held a 7-5 edge before Nebraska swung momentum back and moved ahead 12-8. Rakhmanchik kept answering, finishing the set with nine kills, and Baylor pulled within one at 16-15.
The Bears stayed within striking distance at 23-21 and 24-22, but Nebraska claimed the next point to go up 2-0.
Baylor saved its sharpest fight for the third set. The Bears traded points with Nebraska from the start and built a 5-3 lead after a 3-0 burst capped by an ace from Harley Greek.
Nebraska eventually pushed out to a 13-8 advantage, but Baylor kept grinding back. A Rakhmanchik kill brought the Bears within one at 22-21, and BU grabbed a 23-22 lead on a 4-0 run finished by Rakhmanchik’s 18th kill of the match.
Nebraska answered with four of the last five points to escape with a 26-24 win and finish the sweep.
The numbers tell the story of Baylor’s night: the Bears put up 20, 22 and 24 points in the three sets, after Nebraska had allowed only one opponent to reach 20 points in its first 15 sets of the season. Rakhmanchik moved past 100 kills on the year with 112 and now has 479 in her career.
She has led Baylor in kills in all seven matches this season. Baylor is now 5-2, and five of its seven matches this year have been sweeps, including the last four.
Baylor closes the Ameritas Challenge on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT against New Mexico.
