Baylor Just Entered A Defining Coaching Search

In the wake of a challenging 2026 season, Baylor University has decided to part ways with head coach Dave Aranda, prompting Athletic Director Doug McNamee to address the impactful departure and the interim leadership transition.

Baylor has moved on from Dave Aranda after another loss in 2026, ending a seven-season run that closed with a 40-40 record in Waco.

Athletic Director Doug McNamee released a statement after the firing, offering praise for Aranda while making clear the program was ready for a change. Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman has been named interim head coach as Baylor begins its search for a permanent replacement.

“Anyone who knows Dave Aranda understands what a genuine and honorable person he is and how much he deeply cares for his players, staff and this University,” McNamee said. “He is a gifted coach and a brilliant football mind whose leadership brought some of our best Baylor football memories.

While this is a difficult moment, we believe a change in leadership is necessary at this time for our program. We will forever be thankful to Dave and his family for their time here at Baylor, and we wish them well.”

Aranda arrived in 2020 and, after a 2-7 debut season, helped Baylor break through in a big way in 2021. The Bears surged to a 12-2 finish, capped by a Sugar Bowl win over LSU, and ended that year ranked No. 5 in the AP Top 25 poll.

The rest of the tenure never matched that peak. Baylor posted losing seasons in 2022 and 2023, then won eight games in 2024 before slipping back below .500 again last year at 5-7. That 2025 team featured Sawyer Robertson, Michael Trigg and a wide set of offensive weapons, but it still couldn’t finish the job.

Aranda got another year after former AD Mack Rhoades and the university parted ways. He also changed up the staff by stepping away from defensive playcalling and bringing in Joe Klanderman from Kansas State. Personnel decisions shifted too, with Baylor investing on offense last season, which came at the expense of the defense.

This year, the Bears flipped that approach and put money into the defensive side while also landing five-star DJ Lagway from Florida. Even so, the offensive line became a major problem, the run game sagged, and Lagway wasn’t getting the protection he needed to operate.

The results followed. Baylor dropped back-to-back games against losing teams, and Aranda’s time in Waco came to an end.

Baylor Let A Wild Finish Turn Into One Brutal Collapse

Baylor had control deep into the fourth quarter, and for much of the afternoon it looked like the Bears had put themselves in position to leave Lawrence with a win. But Kansas kept hanging around long enough for the game to swing in a hurry, and a matchup that had tilted Baylors way turned into a gut-punch finish on the Jayhawks' homecoming stage.

The collapse stung even more because it came with so much happening around the edges of the game, from Matthew Gills critical punt to a controversial officiating call that wiped out a sack and a Kansas offense that struggled to find consistent footing. In the end, the Jayhawks turned an 11-point deficit into a comeback and snapped a 14-game skid against Baylor, leaving the Bears to sort through how a win slipped away in the final moments. Baylors Next Coaching Hire Could Decide DJ Lagways Future

Dave Arandas dismissal sent Baylor into an important stretch, with defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman taking over as interim head coach for the final five games of the season. Beyond the immediate search for stability, the bigger issue for the Bears is what kind of leader they bring in next, because the hire could shape the direction of the offense and the programs most important player.

DJ Lagway still has eligibility remaining through 2027, but his future in Waco is not locked in, and Baylors next move could matter just as much as any result down the stretch. An offensive-minded coach would seem to fit the need to maximize his potential, and early names in the mix include G.J. Kinne, Jason Eck and Jeff Traylor, giving the Bears a decision that reaches well beyond this season. [Read more 🡒]

Baylor Makes A Sideline Change At The Worst Possible Time

Baylors narrow 25-24 loss to Kansas landed with extra weight because it did more than just snap a 14-game winning streak over the Jayhawks. It also dropped the Bears to 4-3 and pushed the program into a sudden change on the sideline, with the school moving on from Dave Aranda after the recent run of uneven results.

Defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman will serve as interim head coach for the rest of the regular season, beginning with the upcoming game against UCF. Klanderman, who arrived at Baylor in 2026 after seven seasons at Kansas State, now inherits a team trying to steady itself quickly while the schedule keeps moving. [Read more 🡒]
