Baylor’s 2027 recruiting class picked up another piece on Friday when defensive end Jake Venuto announced his commitment to the Bears.
Venuto, listed at 6-foot-4 and 240 pounds, shared the news on social media and made it clear he’s ready for the next step. He wrote: “I’m proud to announce my commitment to @BUFootball!
Can’t wait to be apart of of the DL family and be a 🐻! #SicEm Huge thanks to @CoachCarsonHall @ahunt90 @CoachDaveAranda @CoachKlanderman @VHSFootball @RecruitVandyFB pic.twitter.com/sxzPYmkANz”
A product of Austin Vandegrift, Venuto has been part of a program that knows how to win at a high level. His school was the Texas 6A State Champion in 2024, when he was a sophomore.
In 2025, he put together a strong season of his own, finishing with 17 tackles, 4 TFLs and 1 sack while earning 2nd Team All-District DE Region 4 District 25 honors. Vandegrift’s run ended with a 51-41 loss to King in the state semifinals.
This fall, Venuto has kept producing despite missing five games because of injury between the season opener and his most recent return. In two games played so far in 2026, he has 9 total tackles, 2 TFLs and 1 sack.
Baylor wasn’t the only school in the mix. Venuto also had offers from UNC, Rice and PVA&M among others before choosing the Bears. He also brings a 4.69 40-time, a number that fits Baylor’s recent emphasis on speed.
There’s a familiar connection, too. If the school name rings a bell, it’s because current Baylor senior defensive end Daemian Wimberly also attended Vandegrift.
Wimberly’s path took him to SMU for the 2023 season, when he played in one game, before spending the next two years at UTSA. He appeared in all 24 games there and totaled 19 tackles, 4.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, 5 QB hurries, 1 BPU and one fumble recovery.
Venuto is now the 13th commitment in Baylor’s growing 2027 class. He’s also the seventh defensive player to join the group and the second defensive end. Baylor’s lead recruiter, Carson Hall, earned credit for extending the offer after a camp in Waco this past summer.

Week 8 around the Big 12 has a little extra weight for Baylor fans, with several league games carrying ranking implications and the Bears right in the middle of the conversation. Baylors trip to Kansas is part of a packed Saturday slate that also includes Texas Tech kicking off earlier in the day, and the broader conference picture is starting to look crowded enough that every result can shift the mood around the standings.
Beyond this weekend, Baylors path only gets more interesting, with games against UCF, BYU, Iowa State and Houston still to come. Several of those matchups figure to be competitive based on how those teams have played so far, which means this stretch should tell a lot about where the Bears really stand as the season moves deeper into conference play. Baylor's Big 12 Hopes Ride On One Tough Kansas Test
Baylor heads into its matchup with Kansas needing a cleaner showing up front, especially in a run game that has not consistently given the Bears the balance they want. The offensive line remains a central concern, but this is also the kind of game where Baylor can lean on the fact that Kansas has had trouble stopping the run and creating pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Isaiah Marshall adds another layer to the challenge, since his mobility can stress a defense that has to stay disciplined at every level. Baylors linebackers have been steady recently, and this test will show whether that group can help keep Kansas from turning scrambles and designed runs into the kind of momentum swings that can decide a Big 12 race.
