Baylor has a real fight on its hands for Lewis Uvwo, one of the top young big men in the country.
The Class of 2027 center has lined up official visits with Kentucky, Providence, California, and Baylor, giving the Bears a spot in a crowded race for the 6-foot-11 prospect. According to 247Sports, Uvwo is the No. 7 recruit in the nation and the No. 1 player at his position.
What makes Uvwo so sought after is easy to see. He brings a massive 7-foot-6 wingspan, elite length, and the kind of athleticism that makes him a nightmare around the rim. On the defensive end, he has already built a profile as a true difference-maker, averaging 4.5 blocks and 12.5 rebounds per game.
His offensive game is still developing, but the tools are obvious enough that evaluators see plenty of room for growth. Adam Finkelstein put it this way: "He’s also an energy-giver who not only plays with the high motor necessary to maximize those physical tools but brings a rare sense of joy with him to the court," writes Adam Finkelstein.
That description fits neatly with what Baylor tends to sell. The program has leaned into its "culture of joy" at the Foster Pavilion, and Uvwo’s personality and playing style make him a natural fit for that pitch.
Baylor also has something else working in its favor: Scott Drew. The Bears’ head coach has a track record that keeps him in the mix with elite talent, and the source of Baylor’s appeal here is the same as it is with Dylan Mingo and other 2027 names, including Tyrone Jamison Jr., who signed in July. Drew’s reputation for developing players and helping send them to the NBA gives Baylor real staying power in a recruitment like this.
Uvwo is set to visit Baylor today, August 28, with the other three schools scheduled to host him throughout September. That gives Drew, his staff, and the current players a chance to make a strong impression before the decision gets serious.
Baylor already has Tyrone Jamison, the No. 9 point guard in the nation per 247Sports, committed for 2027. Add Uvwo to that mix, and the Bears would be looking at a seriously talented future core.
For now, though, the visit tour is just getting started, and Baylor will have to wait with the rest of the field while Scott Drew and company try to work their magic.
