Baylor is bringing back one of its most recognizable looks this fall, and the timing fits neatly with a big one on the schedule. The Bears will wear a throwback uniform with the iconic bear paw on Sept. 26, when they host Colorado at McLane Stadium in the Big 12 opener.
The design reaches back to the Grant Teaff era, drawing from the uniforms worn from 1982-92. Baylor said the throwback brings the bear paw back to the shoulder pads for the first time in more than 30 years, with B-A-Y-L-O-R stretched across the chest.
Deputy AD Jovan Overshown called the uniform “an iconic part of Baylor football history and something that still means a great deal to our former players and fans,” adding, “Bringing it back gives us an opportunity to honor Coach Teaff, the teams that wore it and an important era of Baylor football, while introducing that history to a new generation of Bears.”
The throwback game will also honor the 1991 Bears, one of the most memorable teams to wear the look. That group is set to be recognized during the Colorado game.
One of the defining moments of that season came in Boulder, where Baylor beat defending national champion Colorado. Santana Dotson helped swing the finish with a blocked kick, and Jeff Ireland finished the job with the game-winning field goal.
Dotson, now a Baylor Hall of Famer and football alumnus, said, “Seeing this uniform come back is special,” and added, “So many great memories come back to me. There is a lot of pride and tradition tied to these uniforms, and I think it's special that today's players and Baylor fans will get to experience it again.”
Season tickets and single-game tickets for Baylor football, including the Sept. 26 throwback game against Colorado, are on sale now.

The reveal drew mostly positive reaction on social media, where plenty of fans embraced the retro feel and the clean color contrast. Still, the design did not land as a universal favorite, with some mixed opinions surfacing around a few of the style choices, which should keep the uniform conversation going right up until kickoff. Baylor Faces A Brutal Bowl Line With Dave Aranda Under Pressure
Baylor enters a pivotal season with plenty of change on the offensive side, headlined by a new starting quarterback in DJ Lagway and the kind of reset that can make early expectations hard to pin down. Under Dave Aranda, the Bears are trying to rebound from a stretch that has put the program under a brighter spotlight than usual, especially with the offense needing to find its footing quickly.
CBS Sports recently projected Baylor to miss bowl eligibility again, a forecast that would only sharpen the pressure around Aranda if the Bears struggle to gain traction. In a college football coaching market that can get complicated in a hurry, another lost season would force Baylor to confront not just where the program is headed, but how difficult it might be to chart a new course if change becomes necessary. Travion Barnes Just Raised The Stakes For Baylors Defense
Travion Barnes is already entering the season with a different kind of spotlight after landing on the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, a preseason honor that puts him in the mix for college footballs top defensive player award. The Baylor senior linebacker is one of 91 candidates on the list and one of 17 Big 12 players recognized, a reflection of how much attention his play has drawn before a snap has been taken.
For Baylor, Barnes inclusion is a reminder that the defense has a legitimate centerpiece as the season approaches, and a player capable of carrying expectations beyond Waco. The Bednarik winner will be announced Dec. 10 during the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show, leaving Barnes with a long runway to turn preseason recognition into something even bigger.
