Celebrating a Fundraising Legend: Doug Smith's Lifetime Achievement

In the world of athletic development, few names resonate as strongly as Doug Smith's. With nearly five decades dedicated to fundraising, Smith's contributions have left an indelible mark on collegiate athletics. Recently, his lifetime of dedication was honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD).

Smith's journey in athletic fundraising began at Kent State, where he first made a name for himself as a standout receiver on the football field. His transition from athlete to fundraiser was seamless, driven by his passion for people and his knack for building relationships. "I never met a stranger," Smith reflects, capturing the essence of his approach to fundraising.

His career took him across the country, from roles at Kent State to key positions at the University of Pacific, Cal State-Fullerton, SMU, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Rice. Each stop along the way, Smith brought with him a philosophy rooted in enjoyment and teamwork. His belief in the volunteer team concept, learned from mentor Lynn Eilefson, became a cornerstone of his success.

Smith's tenure at Baylor is particularly noteworthy. As Executive Director of the Bear Foundation and later as Senior Associate AD for Development and Major Gifts, he transformed the landscape of Baylor's athletic fundraising. Under his leadership, the Bear Foundation's contributions soared, surpassing the $10 million mark and setting a record with $12.7 million in his final year at the helm.

Doug McNamee, who succeeded Smith and recently returned to Baylor as VP and Director of Athletics, credits much of Baylor's success to Smith's visionary leadership. "Doug's impact on Baylor is visible across campus," McNamee notes, emphasizing the facilities and scholarships that owe their existence to Smith's efforts.

Smith's influence extends beyond Baylor. As a founding member of the NAADD Executive Committee, he was twice recognized as the national fundraiser of the year. His legacy is not just in the dollars raised but in the relationships built and the lives impacted.

Now retired, Smith and his wife Loraine continue to call Waco home, remaining ardent supporters of the Bears. His story is a testament to the power of dedication, passion, and the human connection in transforming the landscape of college athletics.
