Lewis Uvwo’s rise has gone from intriguing to impossible to ignore.
The 6-foot-11 center from Lagos, Nigeria has emerged as one of the biggest breakout names in the 2027 college basketball recruiting class, and the last few months have pushed him firmly into five-star territory. Uvwo is now a consensus top-10 prospect, and his game has backed up the buzz.
He already looked the part of a rim-running big who can protect the paint, but his summer on the AAU Circuit took things up another level. Multiple games with 10 or more blocks made a strong case that he may be the best interior defender in the class.
That breakout has now turned into a busy recruiting stretch. Uvwo has set official visits to four programs in the coming weeks, giving each staff a chance to sell its vision for how he fits.
Baylor is one of the first schools on the list, and the pitch there is pretty straightforward. The Bears have been searching for more frontcourt production on both ends, and while they’re hoping a healthy Juslin Bodo Bodo can steady things this season, they’ll still need another quality big after him. Scott Drew can lean on immediate opportunity and the chance to be a priority target in the 2027 class.
Cal enters the mix with a different angle. Mark Madsen has done well adding guards through the portal, but the front line has been tougher to solve.
Lee Dort gave them solid production last season, yet the five spot remains a clear weakness heading into the year. For Uvwo, that could mean a chance to be the featured big and the star of the group, especially if he’s only there for one season before heading to the NBA.
Kentucky, as usual, brings the heavyweight appeal. There’s a strong chance both of its centers are gone by next year, with Washington transfer Franck Kepnang entering his 7th year and Malachi Moreno viewed as a consensus sophomore breakout candidate who is likely headed to the 2027 NBA Draft. That opens the door for Uvwo to walk into a premier program and start immediately on a contending roster.
Providence rounds out the first four visits, and new coach Bryan Hodgson has already made his presence felt by rebuilding the roster through the transfer portal. The Friars are expected to make the NCAA Tournament, and the next step is landing elite freshmen in the 2027 class. Hodgson’s sales pitch to Uvwo would include what he did with Izaiyah Nelson, who became the American Player of the Year last season at South Florida before being drafted No. 51 in the recent NBA Draft.
