Steelers Meet Again With Top Candidate for Head Coach Job

The Steelers ramp up their head coaching search with a second interview for Anthony Weaver, a rising defensive mind drawing interest across the league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are continuing their head coaching search with a familiar face set to return for a second look. Former Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is scheduled for an in-person interview with the team on Friday morning, according to reports. This marks Weaver’s second interview with the Steelers, signaling that he’s firmly in the mix as the franchise narrows its list of candidates.

Weaver’s name has also surfaced in Buffalo’s head coaching search-he’s expected to interview with the Bills on Saturday. So, it’s shaping up to be a pivotal weekend for the 45-year-old coach, who’s gaining traction in multiple head coaching conversations.

Here’s where things currently stand in Pittsburgh’s search:

Finalists:

  • Jeff Hafley, Packers defensive coordinator (now with Dolphins)
  • Brian Flores, Vikings defensive coordinator (interviewed)
  • Anthony Weaver, Dolphins defensive coordinator (interviewed)
  • Mike McCarthy, former Cowboys head coach (interviewed)

Additional Candidates:

  • Nate Scheelhaase, Rams pass game coordinator (interviewed)
  • Chris Shula, Rams defensive coordinator (interviewed)
  • Jesse Minter, Chargers defensive coordinator (formerly with Ravens)
  • Ejiro Evero, Panthers defensive coordinator (interviewed)

Weaver’s coaching résumé is one that blends NFL playing experience with a steady climb through the coaching ranks. A second-round pick by the Ravens in 2002, Weaver played seven seasons in the league with Baltimore and Houston. His transition into coaching began in 2010 as a graduate assistant at Florida, and from there, he steadily worked his way up-making stops with the Jets, Bills, and Browns before landing in Houston as the Texans’ defensive line coach.

In 2020, Weaver was promoted to defensive coordinator in Houston, and after a stint with the Ravens as run game coordinator and defensive line coach, he joined the Dolphins in 2024 to lead their defense.

Now, let’s be real: Miami’s defense didn’t exactly light it up in 2025. The unit finished 22nd in total yards allowed, 24th in points allowed, 18th against the pass, and 26th against the run.

Not the kind of numbers that jump off the page. But context matters.

Weaver is widely respected in coaching circles for his leadership, player development skills, and ability to connect with a locker room. His rise has been steady, and teams clearly see potential in what he brings to the table beyond just the stat sheet.

For Pittsburgh, this is a critical hire. The franchise is at a crossroads, and the decision they make now could shape the next era of Steelers football. Weaver’s getting a serious look, and with another interview lined up in Buffalo, it’s clear that teams around the league believe he’s ready to take the next step.
