Ravens Target Lions Coach Scottie Montgomery for Key Offensive Role

The Ravens are casting a wide net in their offensive coordinator search, with experienced Lions assistant Scottie Montgomery emerging as a key candidate.

The Baltimore Ravens are wasting no time in their search for a new offensive coordinator, and they’ve added another intriguing name to their list: Scottie Montgomery. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Ravens have officially requested to interview the current Lions assistant head coach and wide receivers coach for the opening.

Montgomery, 46, brings a diverse and well-traveled coaching résumé to the table. He’s worked at nearly every level of football, from college to the pros, and across multiple offensive positions.

His coaching journey began at Duke, where he served as wide receivers coach from 2006 to 2009. He then made the jump to the NFL, holding the same role with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 2010 to 2012, working with a young Antonio Brown and a veteran Hines Ward during his time there.

After his stint in Pittsburgh, Montgomery returned to Duke to take over as offensive coordinator, showcasing his ability to lead an entire unit. That experience eventually led him to a head coaching opportunity at East Carolina from 2016 to 2018. While his tenure there didn’t translate to long-term success, it added another layer to his coaching repertoire-leading a full program and managing all facets of a team.

Montgomery’s NFL journey continued with a two-year stop at Maryland as the wide receivers coach, followed by a move to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, where he took over as the running backs coach. That role gave him a chance to work closely with Jonathan Taylor, helping guide one of the league’s top rushing attacks during that span.

In 2023, the Detroit Lions brought Montgomery on board as their assistant head coach and running backs coach, a dual role that speaks volumes about the respect he commands inside NFL buildings. Working under Dan Campbell, Montgomery became part of one of the most dynamic and balanced offenses in the league-one that emphasized physicality, creativity, and player development.

Montgomery now joins a competitive field of candidates for the Ravens’ OC job. The list includes some big names and rising minds:

  • Matt Nagy, the former Chiefs offensive coordinator and Bears head coach, who’s been closely tied to Andy Reid’s system and helped develop Patrick Mahomes early on.
  • Kliff Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals and offensive coordinator for the Commanders, known for his Air Raid roots and quarterback-centric approach.
  • Joe Brady, currently the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, who gained national attention during LSU’s historic 2019 season and has since built a reputation for being one of the league’s more innovative young minds.
  • Davis Webb, the Broncos’ offensive pass game coordinator, who’s quickly transitioned from backup quarterback to respected offensive strategist.

Baltimore’s OC search is more than just filling a vacancy-it’s about finding the right voice to pair with Lamar Jackson and the rest of a talented offense that’s on the cusp of something big. The Ravens are coming off a season where they made a deep playoff run, and with a former MVP under center, the next offensive coordinator will be walking into a high-stakes, high-upside situation.

Montgomery’s blend of college and pro experience, his work with both wide receivers and running backs, and his recent success in Detroit make him a compelling candidate. He’s seen the game from multiple angles, and that versatility could be exactly what Baltimore’s offense needs to keep evolving.

The Ravens are clearly casting a wide net, and they’re doing it with intention. Whether they go with a seasoned play-caller or a rising star, the decision will shape not just next season-but the future of the franchise’s offensive identity.
