The Baltimore Ravens have been making headlines this offseason, and not necessarily for reasons they’d prefer. Their decision to back out of the Maxx Crosby trade was a significant development.
Initially, the Ravens were set to trade their first two round picks for Crosby, the standout edge rusher from the Las Vegas Raiders. However, when Crosby didn't pass his physical, Baltimore pulled the plug on the deal.
In a swift turn of events, the Ravens then signed Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals. This move allowed them to retain their first-round picks while still securing a talented edge rusher. But the question remains: did they make the right choice?
According to ESPN's Ben Solak, Hendrickson’s addition will demand some strategic adjustments from defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Solak notes, "Hendrickson will alleviate the Ravens' pass rusher problem, which has been a big issue for years -- but I'm not sure he's an every-down player, and Minter will need to scheme around him in a way Crosby would not have demanded."
Hendrickson: A Valuable Asset
Regardless of opinions on who the Ravens should have targeted, Hendrickson is no slouch. He’s among the top pass rushers in the league, and Minter’s challenge will be to maximize his impact on the field.
While Hendrickson might not play every snap, his presence demands attention from opposing offenses. The Ravens’ decision to keep their draft picks while adding Hendrickson seems to be a savvy move in the eyes of many.
Ultimately, only time will reveal if Baltimore’s strategy pays off. But for now, the Ravens appear to have navigated a tricky situation with skill and foresight.
