Ravens Finally Get A Real Test For Their Big Pass Rush Bet

With Trey Hendrickson's return against the Browns, the Ravens are eager to see if their investment will finally tip the scales in their favor on the pass rush.

The Ravens’ big swing on Trey Hendrickson still hangs in the balance, but Sunday gives them the kind of matchup that could make the gamble look a lot better.

Baltimore handed Hendrickson a four-year, $112 million deal this offseason, a move that raised eyebrows because of his age and questions about how much he brings against the run. But the Ravens did not pay for run defense. They paid for heat off the edge, and that was the whole point - especially for a team that has needed more punch when trying to chase down quarterbacks.

Hendrickson has missed the past two games with a finger injury, which has kept him from making much of an impact lately. He’s set to return this week against the Cleveland Browns, and the timing could hardly be better.

Cleveland gave up eight sacks to the New York Jets last week, and the protection problems don’t stop there. Deshaun Watson has been taken down 19 times this season, the most in the league, and he’s on pace for the sixth-most sacks ever in a single season.

On top of that, Tytus Howard has had a rough year. According to Pro Football Focus, he ranks 61st out of 72 qualifying tackles and has allowed 14 pressures.

That sets up a favorable matchup for Hendrickson, who figures to line up against Howard often enough to make life miserable in the pocket.

There has been some production from Hendrickson already. He got a sack in Week 2 and his presence helped create chances for teammates in Week 1.

But he still hasn’t had the kind of game where he completely takes over and looks impossible to stop. That’s the version of Hendrickson the Ravens are hoping to see now.

Baltimore will be without Lamar Jackson for the second straight week, so the defense has to carry more of the load. So far, the Ravens have been only mediocre when it comes to pressure and sacks. Getting Hendrickson back could change that quickly, especially with second-year pass rusher Mike Green showing signs of growth over the last two weeks.

The sacks will grab the headlines, and that’s no surprise. That’s what Hendrickson is known for.

But even beyond the box score, a disruptive game from him could lift the whole pass rush. With the Browns on deck and a shaky protection unit in front of him, Hendrickson has a real chance to make the $112 million look a lot more justified.

Ravens Week Just Got More Interesting With Browns Trade Buzz

The AFC North picture got a little more complicated this week as Cleveland heads into a Week 6 meeting with Baltimore at 3-2 and trying to steady itself after a loss to the Jets. At the same time, reports have tied the Browns to Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson, one of the more notable names floating around in the early trade chatter as teams start to eye possible line help.

For the Ravens, any move that strengthens a division opponent is worth watching closely, especially with Cleveland already trying to regroup in the middle of the season. Dickersons status has been part of the conversation because of the Eagles recent struggles, but nothing official has happened yet, which leaves Baltimore waiting to see whether a familiar divisional matchup gets a little tougher before the week is over. Derrick Henry Could Be Set Up For A Huge Ravens Breakout

A familiar division matchup suddenly looks a little softer up front for Baltimore, with Cleveland entering Week 6 carrying real uncertainty on three defensive players who could shape the way the game is played. Mason Graham, Carson Schwesinger and Derek Barnett are all listed as questionable after each was limited to just one practice this week, and that kind of availability cloud can matter a lot when a defense is trying to hold up against a physical Ravens offense.

For Derrick Henry and Baltimores running game, the potential ripple effect is easy to see. Graham and Schwesinger would matter especially inside, while Barnetts status impacts the edge, and any combination of those absences could make life more comfortable for the Ravens as they try to lean on the ground game and control the tempo. Ravens Could Get An Important Offensive Boost At The Right Time

Ja'Kobi Lane is lining up to give the Ravens a timely lift after a full week of practice following wrist surgery, a promising sign for a Baltimore offense that could use another healthy target. The rookie receiver was activated from injured reserve earlier this week after missing four games, and his return would add a fresh option at a moment when the Ravens are trying to keep things moving through a bruised lineup.

The timing matters even more with the Browns coming to town and Baltimore already preparing to play without Lamar Jackson and center Cam Jurgens. With those absences already on the ledger, any extra help at receiver carries added value, and Lanes availability gives the Ravens at least one more piece to work with as they sort through the offense for Sunday.
