The Las Vegas Raiders didn’t waste any time once they named Klint Kubiak as their new head coach. With the clock already ticking deep into the offseason, Kubiak and his staff got right to work - and Sunday was anything but a day off.
The Raiders kicked things off by hiring veteran special teams coach Joe DeCamillis as their new coordinator in the morning. But they didn’t stop there.
By the afternoon, they had also locked in their offensive coordinator: Andrew Janocko, a longtime quarterbacks coach who has a strong working relationship with Kubiak. That familiarity matters - especially when you're building a new offensive identity from the ground up.
But the most eye-opening move of the day? That came on the defensive side of the ball, where Las Vegas managed to pry Matt Robinson away from the New York Giants - after he had already been announced as part of their finalized staff.
According to reports, Robinson had just accepted a role as the Giants’ assistant defensive line coach. But with the Giants’ blessing, he’s now heading west to take a more prominent position in Las Vegas as the Raiders’ new secondary coach.
This isn’t just a lateral move - it’s a step up, and it makes a lot of sense when you connect the dots. Robinson spent the last five seasons on John Harbaugh’s staff in Baltimore, earning a promotion each year. During that time, he worked under defensive minds like Wink Martindale and Mike Macdonald - names that carry serious weight in NFL coaching circles.
There’s also a key connection here: Robinson coached alongside new Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Leonard back in 2022 with the Ravens. That shared history should go a long way in smoothing Robinson’s transition into the Silver and Black’s defensive room.
Robinson’s football journey is one of those classic grinder stories. He played at Maryland, logging time at both linebacker and defensive back over five seasons.
In 2015, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but an injury cut his NFL playing career short before it ever really got going. From there, he pivoted into coaching - first as a graduate assistant at UConn, then back at Maryland, and eventually into a coaching fellowship with the Ravens.
That fellowship turned into a full-time role, and by his third year in Baltimore, Robinson was coaching outside linebackers - the very position group Rob Leonard had previously led. Now, with Leonard running the Raiders’ defense, Robinson steps into a bigger role, overseeing the secondary.
This hire speaks volumes, not just about Robinson’s trajectory, but about what’s quietly taking shape in Las Vegas. Any narrative suggesting that Kubiak was struggling to build out his staff takes a hit when a young, ascending coach leaves a stable situation with the Giants - and the Harbaugh name attached to it - for an opportunity with the Raiders.
There’s still work to be done to round out the rest of the coaching staff, but this is the kind of move that shows Kubiak is building something with real intent. The pieces are starting to come together - and if these early hires are any indication, the Raiders might be laying the foundation for something more than just a rebuild.
