Andrei Kuzmenko is away from the Pittsburgh Penguins after a family tragedy in Russia, where his father, Alexander Kuzmenko, was killed in a bear attack earlier this week.
The Penguins said Kuzmenko practiced Thursday morning before leaving for Moscow to be with his family. General manager Kyle Dubas addressed the situation in a statement, saying, “The Pittsburgh Penguins organization was deeply saddened, this morning, to learn of the passing of Andrei Kuzmenko’s father, Alexander,” Dubas said.
“Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the Kuzmenko family and their loved ones as they grieve the loss of Alexander. We ask that the privacy of Andrei and the Kuzmenko family be respected at this time.
“Andrei chose to be surrounded by his teammates and practice with the team this morning before returning to Moscow to be with his family this afternoon. Andrei and the Kuzmenko family have the full support of the Penguins organization during this time.”
According to Russian news source REN TV, Alexander Kuzmenko, 62, was on a fishing trip with several friends to the Bolshoy Yenisey River in southern Siberia on Wednesday when the attack happened. The outlet said a bear came out of the forest and bit him on the head. It also reported that his companions were able to scare the animal off, give first aid and call an ambulance.
REN TV reported that Kuzmenko suffered severe facial injuries, including extensive tissue damage, and later died after being airlifted to a hospital. The outlet also said there was a ban in the area because of increased reports of bears approaching populated areas.
Alexander Kuzmenko was identified by the outlet as a hockey coach, and the father of NHL veteran Andrei Kuzmenko, who signed a one-year, $5-million US contract with Pittsburgh over the offseason.
Andrei Kuzmenko spent the 2025-26 season with the Los Angeles Kings after earlier stops with the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers during his first three NHL seasons. Before coming to North America, he played eight seasons in Russia’s KHL and became a star with St. Petersburg SKA.
The Penguins open their 2026-27 season next Wednesday against the Flyers, though it is not yet clear whether Kuzmenko will be in the lineup.
