Marlon Humphrey’s future in Baltimore is starting to look a lot less certain, and the question hanging over his next chapter is whether his career eventually shifts from cornerback to safety.
That possibility came into focus after a rough 2025 season, one that was derailed by injuries and never really got back on track. Even when Humphrey was on the field, he didn’t look like himself. The numbers reflected the struggle, too: he allowed 831 yards in coverage, the most of any cornerback in the NFL.
Humphrey was asked about the safety idea on Saturday, and he didn’t shut it down. He said he believes he’ll play that position at some point in his career, just not yet.
At 30 years old, and with injuries becoming a recurring issue in recent seasons, the concern is obvious. Cornerbacks rarely age gracefully, and once they cross that age-30 threshold, the drop can come fast. Darrelle Revis and Josh Norman are examples of that kind of slide, and Humphrey is now staring at the same kind of reality if 2026 doesn’t look much better.
If a move to safety does happen, it could make sense as a way to extend his career. But it would also create a problem in Baltimore, where the safety room is already crowded. Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, and Jaylinn Hawkins give the Ravens one of the deepest groups in the league, leaving little obvious room for Humphrey to slide in.
His contract situation adds another layer. Humphrey has one year left on his deal, and after the season he just had, he doesn’t look like an obvious extension candidate right now. Baltimore may decide to go another direction.
There is still a path back to the level that once made Humphrey one of the Ravens’ brightest stars. A bounce-back season would change the conversation quickly, especially with a different play-calling setup from Zach Orr to Jesse Minter.
But the reality is hard to miss: if Humphrey needs to keep finding ways to stay on the field and stay effective, safety may be the move that keeps his career going. Whether that also keeps him in Baltimore is another matter.
