Ja’Kobi Lane keeps turning Baltimore Ravens training camp into his own personal highlight show.
The rookie third-rounder has been stacking eye-popping catches since camp opened, and Wednesday brought two more to the pile. One came on a deep ball while he worked through physical coverage from T.J.
Tampa. The other was the kind of grab that gets passed around instantly: a “spinning 360 catch” over Tampa on a throw from Lamar Jackson down the right sideline, secured in front of the pylon.
Those are just the latest examples of what has quickly become one of the most talked-about camp performances on the roster. Lane has been winning contested balls over and over again, looking like the kind of above-the-rim receiver Baltimore has been missing.
The wild part is how consistent it’s been. From the moment pads went on, Lane has been landing big catches in nearly every practice.
Nate Wiggins and Marlon Humphrey have both been among the defenders left dealing with his poster-worthy grabs, and Jackson has kept feeding him chances. Each time, Lane has answered with the same mix of physicality, strong hands, ball tracking and body control.
For a Ravens offense built around Jackson’s placement and a 6-foot-4 target like Lane, the fit is starting to look dangerous. It’s the sort of receiver the two-time MVP has not had for years, and now he appears to have one.
Still, training camp only tells part of the story. The real checkpoint is coming fast.
Lane is running with the first-team, so it remains to be seen how many preseason reps he’ll get. If those opportunities are limited, that would say plenty about how much he has already shown the staff.
Saturday’s preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles will be the next thing everyone watches. For at least the first quarter, all eyes will be on whether Lane keeps making cornerbacks look helpless or finally hits a quiet stretch.
