The Washington Commanders’ wide receiver search may be drifting away from Brandon Aiyuk and toward a more familiar veteran name.
For much of the offseason, Aiyuk had been tied to Washington because of the team’s need at the position. But that picture has started to shift, and recent social-media activity has only added to the uncertainty around whether Jayden Daniels still wants the Commanders to chase his former Arizona State teammate.
On Monday morning, NFL insider Jason La Canfora of SportsBoom US said Aiyuk’s path to Washington “may be gone now that he is publicly sparring with their star quarterback.” La Canfora also pointed to DeAndre Hopkins, who spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens, as a possible better match for the Commanders.
“He played in the vicinity of Washington last season, a few miles away in Baltimore, and several execs and agents around the league believe Hopkins would be thrilled to play with Daniels,” La Canfora said. “While not a burner, Hopkins continued to show strong downfield target metrics last season with the Ravens, even though he did not see much of the ball. He has elite hands, can box out in traffic and can still make acrobatic catches.”
Hopkins finished last season with 22 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns in 17 games with the Ravens. Baltimore has not shown any indication it plans to bring him back, and Hopkins has said he wants “to play for a competitor.”
La Canfora also relayed the view of a longtime NFL personnel executive who believes Daniels could get plenty out of Hopkins.
“He has played on winning teams and understands playoff expectations, and has been able to connect quickly with mobile quarterbacks who tend to get chunk yards downfield on scramble drills,” La Canfora added about Hopkins. “Money shouldn’t be a hold-up, and Hopkins also comes with less fanfare and potential drama than Stefon Diggs, who has tended to bring more off-field distractions with him.”
Diggs was also recently the subject of an NFL personal conduct policy investigation tied to an alleged incident involving the free-agent wide receiver said to have occurred on Dec. 2, 2025.
Aiyuk’s situation remains messy on its own. Before any expected split with the 49ers becomes official, he would need to petition the league for reinstatement from the reserve/left squad list. Even if that happened as soon as July 6, the Commanders may already be leaning elsewhere.
“Aiyuk has sabotaged himself with the 49ers and quite likely, most of the rest of the NFL as well, and he was banking on a reunion with Daniels, whom he played with at Arizona State, but that seems remote now,” La Canfora said.
That comment comes after Aiyuk has posted multiple videos on social media over the past couple of months, which has drawn attention around the league. He has not played since suffering a serious knee injury in October 2024, and the 49ers voided the remaining guaranteed money in his contract after he did not take part in required rehab sessions.
Some around the league believe Aiyuk may have already played his final NFL game. If Washington ends up signing Hopkins or another pass-catcher before training camp, that would say plenty about where the Commanders stand on Aiyuk.

Ravens May Already Have Clarity On A Huge Lamar Jackson Concern
As training camp approaches, the Ravens are still sorting out one of the more important jobs on the offensive line, with Danny Pinter and Jovaughn Gwyn competing for the starting center spot. ESPN analyst Mike Clay already sees Pinter as the likelier answer, pointing to the kind of experience and steadiness teams tend to value when the quarterback is Lamar Jackson and the margin for error is slim.
Pinters case is not just about familiarity, either. Teammates such as John Simpson and Jackson have already singled out his communication and leadership, two traits that can matter as much as raw blocking ability in the middle of the line. Even so, Baltimore will keep sorting through the matchup once camp and preseason work get going, and the final call is still waiting to be made. [Read more 🡒]
Veteran Receiver Just Dropped A Hint Ravens Fans Will Love
DeAndre Hopkins is still a free agent, but his latest comments made clear he is looking for something very specific as he moves deeper into his career. In a SiriusXM NFL Radio interview, the veteran receiver said he is no longer chasing a regular-season spotlight or trying to force his way into a featured role, and instead wants to fit into a competitive team with Super Bowl aspirations.
Hopkins also downplayed the idea of a reunion with Browns head coach Todd Monken, which only sharpened the focus on where he might land next. For Baltimore, the appeal is obvious: Hopkins spent last season with the Ravens, and his willingness to embrace a smaller role on a contender is the kind of hint fans in Baltimore will notice. Ravens Receiver Battle Could Upend The Week 1 Depth Chart
ESPNs early projection for Baltimores receiver group has Rashod Bateman and JaKobi Lane lined up next to Zay Flowers, a reminder that the Ravens still have some sorting to do at the top of the depth chart. Batemans role remains part of the conversation after a modest but useful season, while Lanes presence adds another layer to a room that is still taking shape as camp approaches.
Elijah Sarratt and Devontez Walker have already given the staff reasons to pay attention during offseason work, and Walkers production on limited chances last season only adds to the intrigue. The bigger question now is whether that momentum carries into training camp, because the Ravens receiver competition looks open enough that the pecking order could look different by the time Week 1 arrives.
