The Cleveland Browns are deep into their head coaching search, and things are starting to heat up. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has officially landed a second interview, making him the first finalist to advance in the process. That’s a strong signal of how seriously the Browns are considering him for the top job-and it’s not hard to see why.
Schwartz, 59, brings a wealth of experience and a defensive pedigree that’s hard to ignore. He’s been around the league, from his early days with the Titans to a five-year stint as the Lions’ head coach, and more recently as the architect of Cleveland’s defense. After a brief hiatus following his time with the Eagles, Schwartz returned to the sideline as a senior assistant in Tennessee before taking over the Browns’ defense in 2023.
And in 2025, his unit delivered. Cleveland ranked fourth in total yards allowed and third against the pass-numbers that speak to a disciplined, well-coached group. While they were middle of the pack in points allowed (14th) and rushing defense (16th), the overall performance showed a defense that could keep the team in games and make life tough for opposing quarterbacks.
But Schwartz isn’t the only name on Cleveland’s radar.
Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is also expected to get a second interview next week, according to multiple reports. Monken, also 59, has carved out a reputation as a creative offensive mind, with experience at both the college and NFL levels.
His journey includes stops with the Jaguars, Buccaneers, and a stint as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, where he helped build one of college football’s most balanced and explosive attacks. He returned to the NFL with the Ravens, and in 2025, his offense ranked second in rushing yards and 11th in points scored-though the passing game lagged behind at 27th.
Monken’s connection to the Browns isn’t new. He was Cleveland’s offensive coordinator back in 2019, though that tenure was short-lived as the team cleaned house after that season. Still, his resurgence in Baltimore and his recent contract extension there show he’s a hot commodity once again.
Here’s where the Browns’ coaching search currently stands:
- Interviewed: Todd Monken (Ravens OC) Tommy Rees (Browns OC) Jim Schwartz (Browns DC)
- Second interviews scheduled: Jim Schwartz Todd Monken (next Tuesday)
- Interviews scheduled or requested: Dan Pitcher (Bengals OC - Scheduled) Mike McDaniel (Former Dolphins HC - Scheduled) Jesse Minter (Chargers DC - Scheduled) Nate Scheelhaase (Rams pass game coordinator - Scheduled) Aden Durde (Seahawks DC - Requested) Grant Udinski (Jaguars OC - Requested) Chris Shula (Rams DC - Requested) John Harbaugh (Former Ravens HC - Expected)
It’s a wide-ranging list, featuring both up-and-comers and seasoned veterans. The inclusion of names like McDaniel and Harbaugh-both former head coaches-shows the Browns are leaving no stone unturned. They’re clearly looking for someone who can not only lead the locker room but also bring a clear identity to the team, whether that’s through a dominant defense, a creative offense, or a blend of both.
For now, Schwartz and Monken are the only candidates with second interviews lined up, and that gives them a leg up in what’s shaping up to be a competitive race. Schwartz offers continuity and defensive toughness, while Monken represents offensive innovation and familiarity with the organization.
The Browns are doing their due diligence, and with a roster that’s not far from contention, the decision they make in the coming days could set the tone for the next chapter in Cleveland football.
