Browns Hire Former Rival Coach in Bold Leadership Move

Todd Monken is returning to Cleveland-this time to take the reins as head coach in a pivotal move for the Browns' future.

The Cleveland Browns are turning to a familiar face to lead their next chapter, officially hiring Todd Monken as their new head coach. It’s a full-circle moment for Monken, who returns to the Browns after previously serving as their offensive coordinator in 2019. That stint may have been short-lived, but it clearly left a lasting impression - and now, Monken gets the top job in Cleveland.

At 59, Monken brings with him a deep coaching résumé that spans nearly four decades, blending college and NFL experience with a reputation for building efficient, high-powered offenses. His coaching journey began back in 1989 at Grand Valley State, but his NFL break came in 2007 with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a wide receivers coach. Since then, he’s worn plenty of hats - from calling plays at Oklahoma State to leading a turnaround as head coach at Southern Miss, before taking over offensive coordinator duties in Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Georgia, and most recently, Baltimore.

Monken’s latest NFL chapter with the Ravens was a mixed bag statistically, but it showcased his identity as a play-caller. In 2025, Baltimore’s offense ranked second in rushing yards - a testament to Monken’s ability to scheme up a dominant ground attack - while finishing 11th in points and 16th in total yardage. The passing game lagged behind at 27th, but that didn’t stop the Ravens from being a tough out on offense, thanks in large part to Monken’s creative use of personnel and commitment to the run.

Cleveland’s decision to hand Monken the reins wasn’t made in a vacuum. The Browns also considered in-house defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.

Schwartz, who remains under contract, was reportedly someone the organization wanted to retain regardless of whether he landed the head coaching job. That continuity on defense could give Monken some breathing room as he focuses on revamping the offense.

Monken’s return to Cleveland comes at a time when the franchise is searching for stability and a clear offensive identity. His previous time with the Browns came during a turbulent 2019 season under Freddie Kitchens, but this go-around, Monken steps in with more experience, a stronger résumé, and a clearer sense of what it takes to win at the NFL level.

Interestingly, had this opportunity not materialized, Monken was reportedly on track to join John Harbaugh’s staff with the New York Giants. But he held out for a head coaching shot - and now, that patience has paid off.

The Browns are betting that Monken’s blend of experience, adaptability, and offensive acumen can guide them to the next level. He’s no stranger to the building, and now he returns with the keys in hand.
