Good morning, Birdland fans!
Spring is slowly making its way back, and with it, the Orioles hit the field in Sarasota for their first game of the season. Sure, it’s just a warm-up, but who doesn’t love a taste of baseball after a long winter?
If you missed the action due to work or school, don’t worry. The Orioles managed eight hits but struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-5.
The highlight? Pete Alonso’s debut blast-a sixth-inning homer that brought in both himself and Jeremiah Jackson, who had singled earlier.
On the mound, the Orioles’ pitchers were lights out. Six pitchers combined for a nine-inning shutout.
Trevor Rogers struck out three over two innings, and Trey Gibson closed it out with three innings for the save. In between, Keegan Akin, Rico Garcia, Grant Wolfram, and José Espada each delivered a hitless inning.
Sure, the Yankees weren’t fielding their top lineup-no Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton-but you play who’s in front of you, and the Orioles delivered. A solid start to the Grapefruit League season with a win and no injuries. Can’t ask for much more!
Today, they’re back at it against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dean Kremer is set to pitch, with Chayce McDermott also expected to make an appearance. Catch the game on MASN and join us for live coverage.
In other news, the Orioles have claimed Bryan Ramos from the Cardinals, adding him to the 40-man roster. With Jordan Westburg out until April, Ramos might just be the depth they need.
Coby Mayo remains a key piece for the Orioles, especially with Westburg sidelined. His potential at third base could be a game-changer for the team.
Roch Kubatko has some insights from the weekend’s games, with a focus on McDermott, who could become a crucial bullpen asset this summer.
Adam Jones is back in camp as a guest instructor, bringing his veteran presence and positive vibes to the team.
Happy birthday to Tom Shopay, who turns 81 today. He played for the Orioles in parts of five seasons from 1971-77.
Here’s to another exciting day in Birdland!
