SARASOTA-The excitement of spring training is in the air, but for Jordan Westburg, the wait to hit the field continues. The talented infielder won't be suiting up for Friday’s Grapefruit League opener against the Yankees due to a right oblique injury. This setback, announced by Mike Elias, the Orioles' president of baseball operations, has left fans eager for updates on Westburg's return.
Westburg, who turned 27 this year, remains optimistic about his recovery. "I feel pretty good now," he shared, reflecting a positive mindset despite the frustration of not starting spring healthy.
"I’m taking it day-by-day, trusting the athletic training and strength staff’s plan for my rehab. I’m hoping to get back in games soon, but the exact timing is still up in the air."
As the Orioles gear up for their first Grapefruit League clash, manager Craig Albernaz acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Westburg's condition. "He’s physically unable to participate right now," Albernaz stated on Thursday. The team is ensuring a thorough evaluation process, involving both internal and external medical experts, to craft the best recovery plan for Westburg.
While Albernaz didn’t delve into specifics about Westburg's ailments, emphasizing the need for caution, he assured that the focus is on giving Westburg the best shot at a successful season. Last year, Westburg's playing time was limited to 85 games due to a series of injuries, including issues with his hamstring, ankle, and fingers.
In the meantime, the Orioles are exploring their options at third base. Coby Mayo, Blaze Alexander, and Jeremiah Jackson are all in the mix. Mayo, who spent last season honing his skills at first base, is now turning his attention to third base during early camp workouts.
The Orioles also have an eye on external possibilities, with former player Ramón Urías still available as a free agent. Elias has hinted that bringing in additional infield talent remains a possibility.
