In Baltimore, the Orioles are navigating some early-season turbulence as injuries shake up their roster plans. With Dean Kremer surprisingly sent to the minors, the starting rotation is set with Trevor Rogers, Kyle Bradish, Shane Baz, Chris Bassitt, and Zach Eflin. But as Opening Day approaches, injuries are creating uncertainty.
Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg were already expected to miss the start of the season. Holliday is on the mend from wrist surgery and should begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Norfolk soon.
Westburg, however, faces a longer road. A partial tear in his elbow means he’s out until at least May, with surgery still a possibility.
As a result, Coby Mayo and Blaze Alexander are set to fill in at third and second base, respectively, when the Orioles take on the Twins in their season opener.
Reliever Andrew Kittredge is also sidelined, recovering from shoulder inflammation. He’s expected to join Holliday in Norfolk.
Meanwhile, Keegan Akin’s status is uncertain after he suffered a groin injury. An MRI will determine his availability.
The bullpen remains a work in progress, with Ryan Helsley, Yennier Cano, Tyler Wells, Dietrich Enns, and Rico Garcia likely to make the cut. Grant Wolfram’s impressive spring could earn him a spot as well. Manager Craig Albernaz is keeping an eye on the waiver wire to bolster the bullpen further.
The infield lineup is taking shape, with Pete Alonso at first and Gunnar Henderson at short. Ryan Mountcastle could see time as a designated hitter, especially against lefties. Utility options include Jeremiah Jackson and Bryan Ramos, both on the 40-man roster.
In the outfield, Dylan Beavers, Colton Cowser, Tyler O’Neill, Leody Taveras, and Taylor Ward are set, though Beavers is dealing with knee discomfort. If his condition worsens, the Orioles might need to look for additional options.
As the Orioles prepare for the season, they’re counting on their depth and resilience to navigate these early challenges. With a mix of promising talent and seasoned players, they’re poised to make adjustments and push forward, ready to tackle whatever comes their way.
