The Yankees spent the trade deadline exploring the catching market, but they never made the kind of move that would have brought in a right-handed bat to pair with Austin Wells.
One possibility on the table was Baltimore Orioles star Adley Rutschman. On Wednesday, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported that Baltimore asked New York about Wells and other Yankees players in a potential swap for Rutschman.
"The Orioles had a request to the Yankees on the table for star catcher Adley Rutschman at the deadline: pitching prospect Elmer Rodriguez, catcher Austin Wells, outfield prospect Yostin Pena plus one of two young starters - either Will Warren or Ryan Weathers," Heyman wrote.
That was a hefty ask for a player who would have arrived with just a year and a half of control and who has battled injuries in recent seasons.
New York places real value on Wells, especially because of the way he handles the pitching staff and calls a game. The Yankees also had reasons to be reluctant to part with Warren and Weathers, both of whom could be important pieces in the bullpen during the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Weathers is under team control through at least 2028.
Rodriguez adds another layer of appeal as an arm with upside, while Pena has flashed at the lower levels, hitting .323 with six home runs in 23 games at Single-A Tampa.
Wells has also given the Yankees more with the bat lately, heating up in the final months of the regular season and carrying that form into October.
For the moment, Ali Sanchez is a usable backup behind the plate, and New York can revisit the catching picture in the offseason.

Orioles Finally Have A Young Starter Prospect Fans Can Believe In
Joseph Dzierwa has given the Orioles something they have spent years trying to identify again: a young starting pitching prospect who looks the part. The 2025 second-round pick has handled his first professional season well, moving from High-A Frederick to Double-A Chesapeake while missing bats and keeping runs off the board. His rise has been steady enough to earn a spot in the 2026 All-Star Futures Game, and it has also pushed him onto MLB Pipelines top 100 prospects list at No. 86.
For an organization that always seems to be balancing short-term contention with the long search for homegrown rotation help, Dzierwas early success matters. Scouts and analysts have pointed to both his command and his pitching mix as reasons for optimism, even if there is still debate about exactly how high his ceiling goes as a big league starter. For now, the important part is simpler: Baltimore finally has a young arm fans can follow with real belief, and the next step in his development will be one worth watching closely. [Read more 🡒]
Orioles Face Tough Calls On Free Agents Who May Not Be Back
The Orioles are heading into a pivotal offseason after a disappointing year and the trade of Adley Rutschman, and the front office now has a stack of familiar names to weigh as it thinks ahead to 2027. Five key players are set to reach free agency, giving the club a chance to reset parts of the roster while also deciding which contributors are worth trying to keep in the fold.
Trevor Rogers, Chris Bassitt, Andrew Kittredge, Ryan Mountcastle and Keegan Akin all bring different cases to the table, whether it is performance, injuries or simple fit with where Baltimore is headed next. Some of those decisions look far cleaner than others, and the Orioles will have to sort out which departures are inevitable and which could still be avoided as the winter unfolds. [Read more 🡒]
Orioles Suddenly Have A Bigger Luis De Len Decision Ahead
Luis De Lens late-season cameo gave the Orioles something to think about well beyond September. The clubs No. 7 prospect worked eight relief appearances and posted a 1.93 ERA, enough to draw praise from manager Craig Albernaz and put his name in a more prominent place in the organizations pitching conversation.
The plan remains for De Len to report to spring training as a starter, but Baltimores rotation picture could soon push the discussion in another direction. If Trevor Rogers departs in free agency, the Orioles may need to add a left-handed starter, and with most of the current rotation options coming from the right side, De Len suddenly sits at the center of a decision that could shape how the staff is built.
