The Orioles made another move ahead of Monday’s 6 p.m. trade deadline, sending outfielder Taylor Ward to the Seattle Mariners and getting three right-handed pitchers back in return.
Baltimore will receive Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling in the deal. ESPN’s Jeff Passan was first to report the trade, and MLB.com first identified the players going to the Orioles. An industry source confirmed the deal.
Ward’s time in Baltimore was short. The Orioles acquired him last November from the Los Angeles Angels in a swap for starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez, and now he’s headed to Seattle after a half-season with the club.
This year, Ward hit .246 with a .730 OPS, seven homers and 30 RBIs. He also led the American League with 87 walks and posted a .383 on-base percentage.
Ward’s power peak came last season, when he launched 36 home runs and knocked in 103 runs.
The return package gives Baltimore three arms to work with. Hoppe has gone 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA in 24 games for Seattle this season.
Moore, a seventh-round pick in 2024, put together a 4-5 record with a 3.72 ERA and four saves in 32 games between High-A Everett and Double-A Arkansas. Kreiling, taken in the 17th round of the 2024 draft, has posted a 1.69 ERA in four starts this year for the Arizona Complex League Mariners and Single-A Inland Empire.
And the Orioles may not be done. According to published reports, they are discussing a trade of catcher Adley Rutschman to the Red Sox or Yankees.

Baltimore is one of several contenders still sorting out lineup and rotation adjustments after making deadline moves, and for a club trying to stay organized on both sides of the ball, catching is one of the most sensitive spots to shuffle.
Samuel Basallo is a name to watch in that process, because Baltimore may need more from him than it had planned when the season began. The Orioles have some flexibility elsewhere, but the way they balance defense, development and the demands of a stretch run could push the young backstop into a larger role sooner rather than later. The Orioles added another outfield option Thursday, acquiring Rece Hinds from the Marlins for cash considerations after Miami had only recently picked him up from Cincinnati earlier this season. Hinds has seen limited major league action this year, but Baltimore had the roster space to make the move and now gets a look at a player whose power tools have long made him an interesting depth piece.
