The Orioles have reached outside the organization again, this time grabbing another position player off waivers.
A source confirmed this afternoon that Baltimore claimed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. from the Mets, with the move coming after New York placed him on outright waivers Saturday. Teams had 48 hours to make a claim, and players have to be in an organization by today to be eligible for the playoffs.
Robert is 29 and spent his first six major league seasons with the White Sox before they dealt him in January. He missed about three months because of a lumbar disc herniation, then came back on July 20 while the Mets were still stumbling through their season.
New York was looking to clear salary with Robert, who is owed about $4.89 million, including a $2 million buyout in the offseason. He played in just 58 games and hit .223/.303/.399 with four doubles, 10 home runs and 23 RBIs.
Over seven major league seasons, Robert has hit .256/.312/.450 with 112 home runs and a 16.6 bWAR across 635 games. He finished second in American League Rookie of the Year voting, won a Gold Glove in 2020 and was an All-Star and Silver Slugger in 2023, when he put up 36 doubles, 38 homers and 80 RBIs in 145 games.
Before he ever reached the majors, the White Sox handed Robert a six-year, $50 million contract and later exercised his $20 million option in November 2025. The agreement also includes a $20 million option for 2027 with a $2 million buyout.
MLB Pipeline had Robert ranked as baseball’s No. 3 prospect before his debut.
For the Orioles, the appeal is immediate: a right-handed hitting outfielder with a hot month behind him and some needed depth after trading Taylor Ward to the Mariners and losing Tyler O’Neill to a shoulder injury. Robert has posted an .841 OPS this month in 24 games, and he has 591 career starts in center field and seven in left.
Baltimore’s 40-man roster is already full, so a corresponding move will be needed.
The Orioles have not announced the waiver claim or said whether Robert will join them today in Denver or Tuesday, when rosters expand to 28 players.
