Jurickson Profar's suspension has left the Atlanta Braves in a bind, but there might be a silver lining with the Baltimore Orioles. Profar's 162-game suspension creates a gap in the Braves' lineup, and the Orioles, with their surplus of corner outfielders, could have just the solution.
Currently, Tyler O'Neill finds himself without a clear role in Baltimore's crowded outfield. Colton Cowser is set in center, Taylor Ward is an everyday player, and Dylan Beavers is a promising prospect. With Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo sharing duties at DH, O'Neill's opportunities are limited.
This scenario sets the stage for a potential trade that benefits both teams. O'Neill, with his $15 million salary, is an expensive option for a fourth outfielder. The Orioles might prefer to move him rather than force him into the lineup just to justify his contract.
Enter the Braves, who are looking at Dom Smith as their DH. Smith's offensive struggles make O'Neill an attractive upgrade. Once Sean Murphy returns, he and Drake Baldwin could share DH duties, while O'Neill could also contribute in the outfield if needed.
Financially, the Braves might be in a good position to absorb O'Neill's contract, especially with the $14 million they save from Profar's suspension. If the Braves are hesitant about the full salary, the Orioles could retain part of it, sweetening the deal with better prospect compensation.
For the Orioles, shedding O'Neill's salary could provide much-needed flexibility. They could invest in their bullpen, which is currently battling injuries, or make strategic moves at the trade deadline. The open roster spot could be filled by a hot-hitting Heston Kjerstad or keeping Jeremiah Jackson active when Jackson Holliday returns from injury.
This trade has the potential to be a win-win. The Orioles gain financial and roster flexibility, while the Braves find a solution to their lineup woes, avoiding further disruption from Profar's suspension.
