The Orioles are making a notable roster move by designating corner infielder Bryan Ramos for assignment. This decision comes as Ramos, who is out of minor league options, faced a challenging path to secure a spot on the MLB roster.
Ramos' journey has been a whirlwind. After being acquired from the White Sox in January, he found himself in a shuffle of waiver claims.
Baltimore initially tried to pass him through waivers, only for the Cardinals to claim him, and then subsequently designate him for assignment themselves. The Orioles reclaimed him shortly after.
At 24, Ramos showed promise this spring, posting a .316 average with a home run and three doubles over 42 plate appearances. However, his regular-season numbers tell a different story.
In 120 MLB plate appearances, he’s hit just .198/.244/.333. His Triple-A performance last year was also underwhelming, with a .216/.309/.396 line and 16 homers over 105 games.
As Baltimore finalizes its Opening Day roster, Ramos will be officially designated for assignment. The Orioles will have a five-day window to either trade him or place him back on waivers.
Meanwhile, Blaze Alexander and Coby Mayo are stepping into the starting lineup at second and third base, filling in for the injured Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg. The bench is set with Ryan Mountcastle, Tyler O’Neill, and Leody Taveras, while Jeremiah Jackson and Weston Wilson are contenders for the final spot.
