The Orioles may be getting exactly the kind of late-season jolt contenders dream about. Félix Bautista, the former All-Star closer, is back in game action after another major shoulder surgery, and a September return to Baltimore is now in play as the club keeps battling for a postseason spot.
Bautista opened a Minor League rehab assignment Sunday with Double-A Chesapeake, his first appearance in a game in nearly 13 months. The right-hander had surgery last August to repair a torn rotator cuff and torn labrum in his right shoulder.
The first outing was rough on the stat line. Bautista got only one out, gave up one hit, issued three walks and allowed three earned runs across 22 pitches. Even so, there was a clear bright spot: his fastball reportedly hit 97 mph, a promising number after such a long layoff.

This comeback has taken time. Bautista missed the entire 2024 season following Tommy John surgery, then returned in 2025 and put up a 2.60 ERA with 19 saves in 35 appearances.
The Orioles are not about to force the issue. After that first rehab outing, Bautista is expected to head to Triple-A Norfolk for more appearances this week, and he’ll probably need several more outings before Baltimore even thinks about activating him.
A mid-September return is viewed as realistic, which would put one of the game’s most dominant relievers back in the mix when it matters most.
At his best, Bautista has been nearly impossible for hitters to handle. He owns a career 2.01 ERA and 67 saves, including 33 in his standout 2023 All-Star season.
For an Orioles team chasing a Wild Card spot, getting Bautista back could reshape the bullpen picture in a hurry.
The first rehab outing was never about the numbers. It was about getting back on the mound.
